Great Britain went to war with Germany to protect the country of Belgium from German aggression. As the German army marched towards Paris, Britain gave the Germans an ultimatum; leave Belgium by August 4'or be prepared for war. On August 4, war was declared. Ontario was heavily involved in the war effort and more than 240,000 men from the province had signed up for duty and thousands more men and women had worked in munitions and armament factories all over the province. The war would rage for four years and three months. Ontario units were among the first troops to see action, going into battle near Ypres, Belgium in April 1915. North St. United Church, Goderich, has, from its beginning been a uniting church. Arriving on horseback in 1831, the Rev. Thomas Whitehead discovered an interested group of pioneers anxious to establish a place of worship. In 1841 the Canada Company deeded Tots 5 and 6 on North Street to the Wesleyan Methodists and a church was built. In 1875 and 1884 it joined with other groups to become the Methodist Church of Canada. In 1906 the present church structure was erected. In 1925 the Methodist, Congregational and Presbyterian Churches in Canada united to form the United Church of Canada. In 1958, the fine pipe organr-installed in 1906, was rebuilt and refurbished. Recent renovations to the church have modo North Street fully accessible with the installation of an elevator. North Street United Church has always concer- ned itself with the missionary effort and the needs of those in the community and throughout the world.
