Economic
growth
For the most part, it was
onward and upward in these
heady Edwardian years of
economic growth and social and
political stability. The 1890s and
early 1900s spawned many new
technical, industrial and
manufacturing concerns in the
province of Ontario. With no income
or corporate taxes, Canadians were
doing well and that prosperity was
reflected, not only in lifestyle, but in
the religious, educaLioiedi aced
cultural institutions that were
constructed and flourishing in those
days.
Automobiles were more a novelty
in those days and the road system in
Ontario was slowly evolving to keep
up with the new machines.
Champions played a key role in the
development of the road system and
the machinery built by the company
in Goderich serviced the road
building industry.
Harry Barker, a Champion
employee for 58 years, recalled that
the company,.in 1912, manufactured
street cleaners, hand carts, sidewalk
snowplows, dump wagons, five
different sized rock crushers, horse-
drawn graders, road rollers, screens
