Mancill, vice- president and treasurer. Things were beginning to take shape for the port town of Goderich and as the new road building equipment manufacturer set up operations here, the town was also planning the newest and most modern public school in the area;' today known as Victoria Public School. Every effort was taken to guarantee that the interior was arranged along the most hygenic and safe lines. The halls and entrances were spacious and well -lit and there was a quiet dignity and imposing effect. Every effort was made to meet the most modern requirements with respect to light, heat, ventilation and sanitary equipment. The masonary and brick work was completed by the' C.A. Reid Co.; carpentry work, Goderich Planing Mills; heating, Charles Lee; plumbing and iron work, Charles Harper; and painting, D. Munroe. Goderich may have been planning , the most modern school in the province, but it was still battling to protect the moral fabric of the community. During the same month of February, J.W. Craigie was granted a licence to open a billiard room despite vehement protests to town council. A deputation of four local clergy, and others, addressed town council on the matter claiming that billiard rooms were "a detriment to the morals of young _ men." That same week, the Goderich senior hockey team tied Stratford 5-5 in the playoffs but lost the replayed game in Stratford 5-2. Many local people attended the game. In March of 1910, there was great excitement in the community as the town prepared to lobby the federal government to undertake an ambitious expansion program in Goderich Harbour. - Goderich town council'agreed to send Mayor Cameron to Ottawa, along with representatives of the " Elevator Company and Western Canada Flour Mills, to petition the government to construct breakwalls north and south of the harbour entrance and plans also called for the construction of wharves and straightening of existing docks. Local merchants and businessmen were interested in Goderich' becoming a port of call. As the town set out on a new course of business and commerce; there were also plans in 1910 to extend telephone service to Auburn, Dungannon, Benmiller, Kintail and other rural points, in the county in the summer. Colborne, Ashfield and West Wawanosh Townships were the last places to be' served by telephone Continued on Page 14 and determ ul path and in 1975 in Stratford. If' the story e but it doesn't.
