Typical 1890s
years old and the task o
vast country by a coast
railroad had begun.
At the same time, a net ork of
roads was being carved out of the
countryside. while many hiviieers
were involved in the business of
farming, the farmer of the 1890s was
being equipped with rakes, mowers,
binders and other implements.
Manufacturing, was a big concern
in the 1890s as a.^propserous Canada
demanded that goods be made at
home. While many flourishing
American cgrnpanies were
welcomed to set up shops in Ontario,
many Canadian ventures were
started up before 1900 as Prime

high tariffs against imported goods.
Farm machinery implement
manufacturers were in full
production and products were being

and even two major breweries which
started in London.
Many of these newindustries-were
financed from abroad• or were
subsidiaries of American companies
which were welcorXteci to bring
factories and jobs to Ontario.
Canada, with its natural resources
and vast potential forthe production
of hydro -electric power, was a good
place to invest in as the 20th century
approached and the future looked
quite bright.
There was a certain measure of
prosperity across the province with
the introduction of Many new
manufacturing and business
ventures and even the fanners of the
day were relativEly well off: It was a
time of the good life in Canada and
especially Ontario. There was money
to be made and penile had: yet to
face the imposition of income taxes
and property tang:
As the 20th century':approached,
there was good reason for optimism
and the residents of this fledgling
