While many flourishing American cgrnpanies were welcomed to set up shops in Ontario, many Canadian ventures were started up before 1900 as Prime Minister John A. MacDonald levied high tariffs against imported goods. Farm machinery implement manufacturers were in full production and products were being shipped all over the world.
