One of my great pleasures as
Mayor of Goderich is
receiving visitors'
complimentary comments on our
clean tree -lined streets, our unique
Square, our friendly people and
industries which span international
boundaries.
Steeped in historical charm and
small town splendor the Port of
Goderich takes pride in its
reputation as Canada's prettiest
town. Excellent boating with two
marinas, beautiful parks, sandy
beaches, wind surfing, golf, tennis,
lake, river and stream fishing,
harness racing, the Huron Historic
.Y i1, and the Huron County Pioneer
Museum are just a few attractions
and activities to enjoy. In Goderich
you can view the most beautiful
sunset in the world - twice!
Our politicians, businessmen and
citizens expend a great deal of effort
to ensure that Goderich remains a
afe place where people can live,
work and play, and which visitors
can enjoy to the fullest.
Progressive industries such as
Champion, working in harmony with
the Town of Goderich, ensures
economic stability and enhances the
quality of life for its residents.
The Town of Goderich is proud to
be your "home town" Champion! I
extend congratulations on your
Centennial and best wishes for the
future.

Because Canada is a land of
vast distances (Ontario alone
is 1,000 miles in length and
1,000 miles in breadth) the
transportation of goods and people
has been and continues to be one of
the integral parts of keeping this
great country together.
Although the railroads opened up
the country, it wasn't until an
extensive road system was in place
that Canadians and Ontarians could
truly move around, and
communicate more effectively.
Excellent highways
and secondary linking -roads
only became possible when
skilled and talented people, like
those at Champion Road Machinery,
invented and manufactured road
building machines.
As Champion of Goderich, with its
850 dedicated employees, celebrates
its 100th birthday, it can be proud of
the major part it has played in
opening up this country with good
roads.
Now, as the second largest builder
of road machinery in the world, this
Canadian company and the people of
Goderich can be extra proud ,
because not only are they building a'
better Canada, but they are also
helping 88 other countries build
better transportation links as well.
In my dual capacity as Provincial
Member of Parliament for Huron -
Middlesex and Minister of
Agriculture and Food, I too realize
the great gift Champion has
provided to the people of Ontario. I
am proud to represent them in the
Legislature and, as they enter their
second century of service, I wish
them many more years of continued
success.

n a country as young as
Canada the celebration of
Champion's centennial is a
particularly special achievement,
the effects of which are felt not only
in our county but in national and
international forums.
As the largest employer in Huron
County the impact Champion Road
Graders has on the residents of the
Federal riding of Huron -Bruce ,
cannot be understated. Over the
years President, Bruce Sully, and
his sons, Mike, Vice President
Manufacturing, and Mark, Vice
President Marketing, have won the
100% Canadian owned business an
estimated 60%U share of the domestic
market.
In the larger scheme of things,
Champion's contribution in third
world must not beuverlooked. For
example, Ethiopia has benefitted
greatly from Champion's
involvement. With the Canadian
International Development Agency's
assistance, Champion is playing a
crucial role in the desperately
needed road upgrading and
construction that is critical for
effective food transportation and
agricultural development. A number
of similar projects are also bearing
fruit.
I was pleased that one of my
colleagues, the Right Honourable
Joe Clark, was able to participate on
the occasion of the signing of the
joint manufacturing agreement with
Thailand. This is but one of
Champion's initiatives to compete in
the Far East construction market.
On a lighter note, earlier this year
Parliamentarians had the
.opportunity to view the old and the
new, side by side, on the lawn of the
House of Commons. The
technological developments of the
past century were readily apparent
and appreciated by all who viewed
the 1886 and 1986 road graders.
It is with heartfelt pleasure, then,
that I congratulate Bruce, Mark and
Mike and the employees of
Champion Road Graders on this
outstanding achievement and wish
them continued prosperity.
