On Wednesday, Mrs. Worsell's Grade 5
class watched the movie "Charlie and the
Chocolate Factory," as a follow-up totheir
novel study. They shared the movie with
their peer partners from Mrs. Young's
Grade 1 class.
Our senior boys' and girls' volleyball
teams will be picked shortly. The volleyball
tournament has been scheduled for Satur-
day, Noverriber 15, at GDCI.
The students in Portable 2 did art work
and wrote poems on the floor It was their
way of saying goodbye to it.
Our class room is much brighter with the
new floor and the unexpected two new
doors.
Mrs. Tebb.4t's 'Grade 6 class had Mr.
Wilkins install a pulley system in our
classroom. It is a simple machine which
they have tested and discovered that it
makes lifting a heavy load easier.
They had started their Hallowe'en centres
last week.
Mr. Liddle's Grade 6 class received let-
ters and cards from their penpals in Prince
Edward Island. Each student is twinned
with a Grade 6 student at the L.M. Mon-
tgomery Elementary School, in East
Royalty.
Room 4 designed monster pumpkins this
week, carving them with the help of Mrs;
Aitchison, Mrs. Curran, Mr. Dalton, Mrs.
Durnin, Mrs. McDowell,. Mrs. Rintoul,
Leslie Rockwell, Mrs. Ross,, Mr. Tremeer,
and Mrs. Webster. Some extremely scary
designs resulted, followed by a feast of
toasted pumpkin seeds!
On Wednesday we were joint authors with
Mr. Hazlitt's Grade 8 class, working in pairs
to create monster books. Our books included
adjectives, nouns, and verbs to describe
some strange creatures indeed: "This
ghastly ghoul lives in the stove and eats
potato peelings!" - along with some ex-
cellent illustrations.
Monster Daze
On Thursday and Friday the primary
classes at Brookside held two monster
theme mornings. Workshops are also
presented for groups of students consisting
of 12-14 children from Grades K-3. Sessions
t6
were prepared by Brookside staff, Educa-
tion Centre Staff, and volunteers including
Deidre Graham, Deb Heslinga, Mary Mo
fatt, Louise Sygrove and Marie Webster. All
assistance was provided by voluntary Mary
Bakker, Joan Black, Michelle Brindley,
Judy Smith, Bev Weaver and Brenda Wylds.
Monstery workshops included brainstorm-
ing monster words, making pattern books,
creating (and drinking!) "blob juice",
healthful eating monster -style, monster
graphing, monster baking, and monster
puppetry.
All groups began the two days with an
opening session together in the gym and
ended the theme on Friday with a sharing
session at noon, to discuss the activities.
Theme days provide an opportunity for
developing learning skills in a high -interest
context, as well as encouraging skills of
working together with others. Mrs.
McDowell did a super job of organizing
workshops,and classes for "Monster Daze!"
The Brookside Student's Council
celebrated Hallowe'en by providing a dance
for Grades 4-8, and a costume party for
Grades K-3. Prizes were as follows:
