Community News The Christmas Seal Campaign officially started on Nov. 1, when The Lung Association, Huron -Perth Counties mailed seals to approximately 10,000 households in the two counties. Goderich Mayor Eileen Palmer (left) got a jump -on that, when Salim Remtulla, association president, personally presented her with some 01 the 1986 seals, on Oct. 30. A second mailing on Nov. 21 will ensure every household receives an appeal for donations. Money raised from the campaign is used for community education and support programs, as well as medical research into respiratory diseases. (photo by Patrick Raftis) Campaign launched in Huron STRATFORD - Christmas Seals laun- ching The Lung Association's Christmas Seal Appeal will be reaching approximately 10,000 households in Huron -Perth Counties the eat ly part of November. Christmas Seals have beenthe traditional way for The Lung Association to raise funds since 1927, when tuberculosis was the scourge of North America and Europe. "The goal for the 1986 campaign in On- tario is $4.5 million," says Fund Raising Chairman Eileen Beauchemin. "Our goal in the Huron -Perth area is $70,000. The com- munity has benefitted from a successful 1985 campaign, but we must meet or exceed our goal if we are to continue programs that are being carried on now. We are a community-based organization, and our staff and volunteers who conduct our pro- grams are being stretched to the limit to meet the needs of the community." During the year The Lung Association of Huron -Perth Counties has conducted health presentations in 40 schools and participated in school health fairs. The hazards of smok- ing and the effects of carbon monoxide from tobacco smoke were ably demonstrated with the use of a Carbon Monoxide Ecolyzer. Better Breathing Programs were con- ducted for people suffering from chronic obstructive lung disease, enabling them to accomplish a more rewarding lifestyle. A new program was developed to en- courage business and industries to augment a NO SMOKING policy in the workplace and. the COUNTDOWN Stop Smoking course has been presented in various parts of the two counties. Financial assistance enabled one child to attend a special summer camp for two weeks.
