Runacres will meet with the parties and write a report setting out which matters have been agreed upon and which matters remain in dispute. The report may also con- tain recommendations for settlement. A graduate of the University of Toronto, 1947, Runacres retired as the Director of the Hastings County Board of Education in 1979. In the intervening years, he held posi- tions of elementary teacher,. secondary teacher, principal and inspector before his appointment as Director in 1969. Since retiring, he has been involved in studies at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, and has been 'providing a con- sulting service to education and business. His field of specialization is Human Rela- tions and their application to effective management. Runacres' previous fact finding appoint- ments include: Espanola Elementary, Hornepayne R.C.S.S., Renfrew R.C.S.S., Oxford R.C.S.S., and Perth County Secondary. CLINTON - A random sampling of lO per cent of the taxpaying public in Huron Coun- ty is being asked to take part in a survey be- ing conducted by the Communications and Public Relations Committee of the Huron County Board of Eduation (HCBE). The survey is being presented to a wide sampling of the population, including parents of children in the school system, as well as non -parent taxpayers. As well, all employees in the HCBE are being asked to f'a1rp nRrt in the survey 'rile survey is being eta:ducted to ha1p tl-ie Communications Committee determine a number of effective strategies for building better public understanding and support for the school system. Ideas collected will be compacted to the inventory of communica- tion activities already being undertaken by the school system. Both employees and, parents in selected school communities are being given the op- portunity to offer suggestions about how the HCBE might improve its image with the families served by the school system. Several Communications Committee members reported at their October meeting that the school system is already well respected by many people in the county. Bill Black principal at Blyth Public School, reported, "I've found that 99 per cent of the people I've talked to said that communica- tions were great." In explaining the goal of the Communica- tions Committee, Mary Anne Dempsey, trustee for Goderich, told committee members that this year the HCBE trustees outlined one of their goals as improving public relations within the sytem and m the community as a whole. She noted, "ere was a feeling out there that they (trustees) didn't have enough information." She said that the ministry of education has advised school boards to re-examine their communication policies, and she noted, "If we have an excellent program, that's great news." Central Huron Secondary School teacher Rob Parr agreed, but noted that while he had received positive comments, he also -1 m Focus on readin All Huron -Perth Catholic teachers will focus on the topic of the reading process dur- ing their Nova 14; Professional Activity workshop to be held at St. Mary's School, Goderich. Keynote speaker will be Larry Miller, a professor of education from Queen's Univer- sity. Mr. Miller will also' address the Grade 4-6 teachers in a separate workshop. Mr. Ed Hannon, an English teacher with the North York Board of Education, will meet with Grade 7-8 teachers. Sally Rathwell, Clinton-Tuckersmith Township trustee said that while com- munication efforts were positively rated, they should not be abandoned by the board. She noted, "The parents need to know what their kids are doing. They need to know how their tax dollars are being spent and that the money is being well spent." People who have received, the question- naire forms are encouraged to respond to thecal and to forward thein to the neighborhood HCBE school. Members of the general public are also encouraged to con- tact their local trustees or school principals to offer comments and suggestions. The committee will study information by the employees, parents and community con- tacts. The priorities established at that time will be developed into a major presentation to be made to all board employees at a special seminar to be held on May 4, 1987. g process language consultant with the Waterloo County Board of Education, will speak to primary teachers. The Goderich professional activity ses- sion will be the second of three devoted to the topic of reading. At each of the Nov. ses- sions, teachers will report on tasks which were assigned by previous workshop leaders on Sept. 8, The final workshop, to be held on May 4, will focus on the variety of ways in which students can respond to print.
