HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1986-11-05, Page 5Opinion Goderich owes Exeter an apology some South Huron tans below them, and Dear editor, The tables have been turned it seems! Not only has the South Huron Senior football squad defeated Goderich for the Huron - Perth title, but this time also, the Goderich faithful have little cause for complaint con- cerning the actions of South Huron fans. Alas! the reverse is true. I, a South Huron Alumus was watching and enjoying the South Huron romp when a maior situation occurred in the stands. A few rowdy Goderich fans began tossing debris on to some South Huron fans below them, and LETTERS when some of our South Huron girls ob- jected the Goderich lads began cursing. When a friend objected to that, the Goderich lads sent three of their own to enforce a little respect. In the ensuing fight, two South Huron lads stepped in and pulled off two Goderich lads to even things up. When police arrived they pulled the Goderich "fan" off - and dragged the Exeter away to a waiting police car. I'd suggest to the ladies who will cheerwrote alier ndthat at any game, parents some students will swear but not just anywhere will people attack opposing fans. I feel that Mr. Shaw should withdraw his apology and that the Mayor of Goderich and the Principal of Goderich District Collegiate Institute should penand t lthapologize restof the to Shaw, Derek Hipp en South Huron following. N Smith Goderich Tax Payer clothe feed or educate your children You, Haydon should be commended We have yet to Dear editor, On October 22 and 29, 1986, I was asked to present a brief to the Standing Committee for Private Bill Pr. 7. This Bill concerned the dissolution of the Huron County Library Board. Because of the many and varied commitments that are involved with a young family, I chose not to attend at Queen's Park. Elsa Haydon, whose commitments, I am sure, are as many and as varied as my own, did not falter. She made the effort and took the time to present her argument. I applaud National 4-H Week proclaimed by Wise Elsa who has once again walked the extra mile. While County officials travelled to Toron- to on tax money, Elsa had to use her own. Because the Committee had to reconvene a second day, Elsa had to multiply her ex- penses by two. I, am certain that Elsawould not have missed this opportunity to defend her stand. Was she representing the general opinion? I have not heard the contrary. Who would the average taxpayer rather have given the expense money to? Federal Minister' of Agriculture John Wise has proclaimed November 10 through 16 as National 4-1.1 Week, bringing to public attention the extensive and exceptional work of the 4-H organization across Canada. From its early days as a purely agriculture -centred youth club, Canadian 4-11 has evolved into a sophisticated pro- gram promoting responsible citizenship, leadership, social awareness and in- dependence, while still maintaining the basic concept of "learning to do by doing". At the community level, thousands of leaders share time and expertise in super- vising local 4-1I groups in skill -developing projects and activities. At the national level, largely thanks to corporate sponsors, 4-H achievers continue to learn and .grow, travelling to workshops, conferences, camps and on youth exchanges in Canada and abroad, and vying for valuable scholarships. National 4-11 Week highlights the unique opportunity 4-H represents today for young jEieo 1e- rowing up in the rural communities tiu u verop tneir potential. These young peo- ple will someday thread their way through the entire fabric of the society in rural, ur- ban, and suburban settings. Thanks to 4-H, to these young Canadians, learning and do- ing will have become second nature. III realize the benefits of the dissolution of the Library Board. It is quite apparent that considerable sums have been spent on what has been described as a cosmetic change. I would have rather seen the money incorporated into a dwindling library budget. Because of a political vote, the Board is probably dissolved. Elsa and others presented excellent argument for the cause and I want to publicly say thank u. J.E Cieslar.
