American sportsmen fishing in Ontario
are on their way to clobbering their Cana-
dian counterparts in the 1986 Molson Big
Fish Contest. Contest officials are watching
the steady flow of U.S. entries with increas-
ing interest. Again, as in 1985, northern pike
and muskellunge are the big draws for U.S.
tourists.
But on the salmonid side of things, the On-
tarians have the upper hand.
Southern Ontario's Soper Creek was the
scene of Tom Foster's memorable catch.

Expensive survey will examine
sports related injuries in Ontario
"Tell Us What Happened!" That request
to the sporting public of Ontario is the theme
of an extensive new survey on sports -related
head, neck and spine injuries. A call to a toll
free number - (1-800-268-5474) - will help
combat the escalating incidence of injuries
in sports, fitness and recreational activity in
Ontario.
The program is part of a major research
study being conducted by the Ontario Sports
Medicipe and Safety Advisory Board
(OSMSAB), an agency created by the
Ministry of Tourism and Recreation to in-
vestigate the various safety aspects of sport
and to make recommendations to the
Minister John Eakins. It comes at a time
when more Ontarians than ever before are
participating regularly in amateur sports,
personal fitness programs, and physically
demanding recreational pursuits — an en-
couraging statistic marred by one serious
drawback.
"We've seen an increase both in the
number and severity of sports and fitness in-
juries over the past decade," explains
OSMSAB Executive Director Jim Caldwell.
"Over this period more than 3,000 eye in-
juries alone have been reported, mo17e. than
10 per cent of which resulted in total blind-
ness. Our number one priority is to identify
the hazards and to recommend strategies
aimed at reducing these injuries... from
easier access to emergency care and first
aid facilities to improved coaching, public
education programs and facility renova-
tions. The fact is, most of these injuries
could have been prevented, and that's why
public participation is essential to our
research. We're asking everyone in Ontario
who has suffered from a sports -related
Bead, neck or spine injury to call in and tell
us about it."
The survey runs until March, 1987, at
which time the OSMSAB will analyze the
results and recommend what course of ac-
tion needs to be taken, arid what role the
government should play.
Reporting to the Ministry of Tourism and
Recreation. the OSMSAB was established in
April, 1985 to provide. recommendations
leading to thereduction of serious injuries in
sport, fitness and recreational activity in
Ontario, and toi establish a mechanism for
the efficient collection of injury data. The
Board is scheduled to issue its final report in
April, 1987.
Search for feats of strength is underway
The Ontario chapter of the International
Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team, a non-profit
organization which sponsors over 50 races
annually in Ontario, is looking for factual in-
formation to be included in their new
booklet chronicling feats of strength per-
formed by Ontario residents. The booklet
will be distributed to fitness clubs and
health organizations across Ontario.
Sri Chinmby, 55 year old founder of the Sri
Chinmoy Marathon team, took up weightlif-
ting 15 months ago, when a knee injury
prevented him from runningto stay fit.
Beginning with a 40 lb. dumbbell, he can
now lift 500 lbs. with one arm, more than
threetimes his body weight of 159 lbs! Sri
Chinmoy, who for the past 16 years has led
twice -weekly Peace meditations at the
United Nations in New York, is trying to
show that physical fitness can help us in our
inner life of prayer and meditation and that
conversely, our inner life can help us in
sports by teaching us the ideal of self -
transcendence: competing not to defeat
others or to gain fame but simply to develop
our own potential and go beyond our present/
new feats of strength to show the special
powers of concentration and meditation. He
has lifted 1O,lbs. on a standing calf -raise
machine which allows the lower leg muscles
to bear the entire weight resting on the in-
dividual's shoulders. More recently, using a
modified calf -raise machine, Sri Chinmoy
lifted a 15 -man human pyramid on a plat-
form connected to the machine, a 4733 lb.
Chevy van, ,a , 3615 ib. 27 ft. sailboat, an
elephant and last weekend, a former RCMP -
officer and his friend, both on horseback,
weighing 3118 lbs.
Any information about present day or,
historical feats of sti;l'ngth would be greatly
appreciated. All contributors will receive a
