Vikings will play
Exeter, in for Huron -
Perth championship
By TD
To no one's surprise, the GDCI Junior
Vikings will be playing the South Huron
Panthers Saturday in the Huron -Perth
Conference football finals. The Vikings
qualified for the finals by defeating the
Central Huron Redmen of Clinton 14-8,
here Thursday, while the Panthers knock-
ed off Norwell in the other semi-final,
33-22.
The Panthers and the Vikings finished
first and second in the regular season, with
the Vikings only loss coming in the final
game of the season, 21-13 to the Panthers.
That victory gave the"Panthers first place
and home field for the final.
The Viking victory over Clinton was.
anything but pretty here Thursday. The
Vikes got two first-half touchdowns on
short runs by Sean. Wilson and Pheng
Troeung,, plus a two-point conversion on a
pass from Greg Alcock to Jason Millian,
but then slipped into a lethargy that almost
cost them the game.
Clinton scared a to, uchdpwn jtr „before
the end of bile half, when the', Vikings •-"'
punted froth their own endzone, the ball hit
the goalposts and a Redman fell on it. A
two-point conversion made the score 14-8
and that's the way it stayed. In the second
half,' the 'Vikngs fumbled the ball away
several times and .an ineffective Viking
punting game helped keep Clinton in the
game.
Sean Wilson and Pheng Troeung
acounted for the bulk of the Vikings of-
fence. Wilson rushed for 139 yards and
Troeung gained 103. In total, the Vikings
gained 294 yards on 15. first downs.
Defensively, the Vikings used some new
alignments which worked will in contain-
ing the wide stuff. Rob Dempsey and Jason
Millianat the corners were effective in
stopping the Redmen on sweeps. Rob
Mathers and Scot Glew played strong
games in the middle. Brian Corriveau in-
tercepted two passes and Brian Dempey
recovered a fumble. Sean Wilson was in on
most of the Viking tackles.
The Vikings' loss to Exeter in, the
regular season game came as a result of a
second -half let -down and Viking coaches
Bruce Baker and Bill Garrow are hoping to
come up with a solution to this tendency,
which has plagued their team this season.
It ws Exeters greater depth which resulted
in two late fourth-quarter touchdowns in
the 21-13 game. The success of the Vikings
may well depend on how effectively they
use two-way player Sean Wilson. He is pro-
bably the best in the league, but going both
ways leaves him with little to give late in
the game.
Game time Saturday in Exeter is 1:30,
p.m.

Goderich Bantam Elevators spotted Bel-
mont two goals in the first period before
Jeff Boyce replied with an unassisted slap -
shot at the 7:35 mark in league play last
Saturday.
Period two saw no scoring but the home
team had several chances. The forward
work of Alcock, Cauchi and DeWinter
along with the defensive play of Million,
Stegenstad and Moss provided an edge in
play for Goderich.
Early in the third period Belmont took a
3-1 lead but a rash of penalties gave the
Elevators the opportunity to score on
power play goals by Greg Alcock and Chris
O'Neill at 6:04 and 7:52 with assists going
to Stegenstad and Alcock.
Excellent goaltending by Shawn Currie
in the late stages of the game perserved
the tie for a tiring Goderich squad.
During junior semi-final play 'at GDCI on October 23 the visiting
CHSS Redmen had a hard thne stopping the Viking runners
throughout the first half, allowing the Vikings to take a lead that

GODERICH MINOR
HOCKEY REPORT
On• Sunday the Midgets travelled to
Parkhill for their second meeting of the
season and again came out on the winning
end with a 9-4 victory.
Like their first game against Parkhill,
Goderich was slow off the mark but they
still took a 1-0 lead. However, this lead did •
not last for long as the home team went
ahead 2-l.
Goderich then scored three goals to go
ahead to stay as the highly explosive of-
fence took a period to get in gear.
,Dave Duncan, Wayne Nivins and Rod
Nurse had. two goals each' to ' spark the
team.

The'first period, went scoreless with the
first seven minutes played without a whis-
tle to stop play. Each team was skating
and hitting hard with good take-outs.
The visitors tallied the only goal of the
second period on a long shot.
Early in the third the visitors made it 2-0
on a goal mouth scramble. ,
The Lions however dug deep and
mounted their comeback midway inthe
period as Jason Cook beat the goalie on the
short side
after Sean
Hamilton made good checks t free the
pack.
The Lions' catalyst, Aaron Duckworth,
then scored twice within a minute at the
ten minute Mark on breakaways. Its
first goal was assisted by Jeremy Grasby
and Jared Whalen and the second by Kelly
MacDonald.

During Atom "A" hockey play last week
the- Goderich Machinists dropped both
games they played against . the Clinton
team.
Clinton took an early lead in the first
game on October 21 when they scored in
the .first minuteof play. They held that
lead throughout most of the game, winning
5-2.
Brian Hodges tied i it up for the
Machinists with 6:20 left in the first on an
unassisted goal, but that was as close as
they would come for the rest of the game.
Clinton scored four unanswered goals
throughout the second and third periods
before, with less than a minute .to play,
David Boyce scored on a pass from An-
drew Scott.
Top performances for Goderich were
received from the two goalies, Jamie Red-
mond and Chris Lyndon.
The Machinists had a better showing
against Clinton at home on October 23, but
were defeated 5-3.
Goderich once again fell behind early in
the first period, but tied it up with 5:25 left
on a goal from Ryan Farrish. Andrew
Scott got the assist.
Unfortunately, this -goal was not enough
Us Clinton scored twice more in the first to
give them a 3-1 lead.
A goal from Brian Hodges on an assist
from •Taylor Chcchini late in the second
period brought the Machinists back into
the game, but 'Clinton was quick to reply
with one of their own, leaving the score at
4-2. _
In the first minute of play in the final
period Goderich again came close to even-
ing up the match on a goal from David
Boyce. However, it wasn't enough to tie up
the game and Clinton went on to score a
final goal, leaving the game with a 5-3
victory.
Assisting on the final goal were Drew
McCauley and Don Rivers.
The Machinists received outstanding
performances from Jamie Redmond in
goal, Derek Gilchrist on defense and Ryan
Farrish on the forward line.
