Festival lox. office revenue
u more th
The Stratford Festival has announced net
box office revenue for the 1986 season is
$378,212 higher than last year.
"This is excellent news," Festival
General Manager Gary Thomas said. "The
1986 season was daring in its inclusion of
several lesser-known Shakespearean works
(Cymbeline, Pericles, The Winter's Tale
and Henry VIII) and it is a great achieve-
ment to be able to show a net increase at the
box office. That is a tribute to the excellence
of the productions themselves. The first
season under the leadership of Artistic
Director John Neville has attained
remarkable results."
"Our 1986 expenditures will be well under
budget and with revenue increases at the
bw . office eni flow fund iaisine, ae.Ceeltiee,
we are guaranteed a second consecutive
season of black ink at the Festival. Also,
that surplus will be achieved without
reliance on income from special sources. I
think we have proven the Festival is well on
$300,00

its way to full financial recovery."
Gross box office for 19 was $8,814,049
compared to $8,792,289 in 1985. Discounts
totalled $547,400 in 1986 (compared to
$903,852 in 1985), leaving a net box office
revenue of $8,266,649 for 1986. Paid atten-
dance for Festival presentations in 1986 was
426,076 (compared to 436,243 in 1985).
in 1986 was 426,076 (compared to 436,243 in
1985).
"It is especially important to note the ex-
eeptionally strong finish we enjoyed in the
last three months of the 1986 season," Gary
Thomas added. "It was accomplished
without offering any special late -season dis-
counts which is why we look forward to a
very successful 1987 as we celebrate our
:15 tli .Luiivcrsary SeaE en."
The 1986 season opened May 19 (previews
began May 9) and closed October 19. There
were 10 productions (with a total of 493 per-
formances) presented in the three Stratford
theatres.
