Get federal deficiency relief
The Ontario Corn Producers' Association with the Canadian rC9eFa dde ra Uon ocommon
has expressed it's delight at the recent deci- Agriculturem(CF n) to the Minister
sion of the Government of Canada to pay $1
f
billion of special deficiency payments to Agriculture that the funds be allocated by
'Canadian grain farmers, damaged by U.S. province on the basis of average total value
and EEC subsidies. The announcement of grain and oilseed production for the
represents, in part, a response to a vigorous various
organizations over
recent years;
pro-
since
o-
grain -
campaign which the association has waged, producing
since last February, emphasizing the finan- vince, along with Government officials,
cial devastation which U.S. Farm Bill sub- would decide upon the moat equitable and
sidles are creating for Canadian corn payments method farmers who producethe d grain
and oilseed in 1986.
Mrs. Wise has agreed to have Agriculture
Canada staff analyze the implications of this
recommendation, and to schedule a Subse-
quent meeting in about three weeks time.
The Ontario Corn Producers' Association
participated actively in formulating the
CFA recommendation and is fully suppor-
tive of the compromise position presented.
The proposed allocation method is much
fairer to growers in all parts of Canada than
other mechanisms, such as assocation on
growers. Such subsidies now total $
million daily, and exceed the actual market
price of corn for many American farmers.
The new Canadian grain deficiency pro-
gram was announced by Prime Minister
Mulroney on Oct. 3. More details were pro-
vided by Agriculture Minister John Wise to
farm leaders on Oct. 16. According to Mr.
Wise, the payment will total $1 billion
dollars, will be paid to grain and oilseed
growers in all provinces, will involve new
money and will be paid as quickly as
possible.
At the meeting on October 16, leaders of the basis of acreage seeded to grains and
grain -producing organizations associated oilseed.
