Inside my head more questions rattled through the grey matter. Questions like: the Goderich Little Theatre is an ex here's usive club; why would they want me? ... no way I can compete with those who have been on stage before; why would. they final- want ly with no experience • • a I asked myself, why not? It was a Sunday afternoon not too long ago when I was asked by Diane Siemon to portray, of all characters, a newspaper reporter in the Goderich Little Theatre production of "The Front Page" which runs at the 1.ivery November. 5 through November 8. Diane simply. told me she was extremely short of actors for the play which calls for a cast of 22 performers. Admittedly, I'd seen the ad in The Goderich Signal -Star the week before, announcing auditions would be held. And admittedly, I'd thought for a moment of trying out for the part but I had dismissed the idea saying to myself, the Goderich Little Theatre is a close-knit group of artsy-type people and there is no room for a clod like me. Boy was I wrong. I agreed to read the script, liked the plot and the character development and the fact that the line load was not heavy. A nice way to fulfill a fantasy, trying my hand at the live stage. Most of all I liked the fact that most of my fellow acto s on stage would be first time performers. ' ave me a feeling of "Oh well, I won't one in trying something new." I felt could prepare meself for a little hard ork. Boy was I right. After a few weeks of rehearsals, 1learn- ed that Diane selected The Front Page for severalreasans. It seems that 'many others in town had the same feeling I did, that G.L.T. was a closed shop. She wanted to prove that it, in fact, was not, and that, in fact, G.L.T. was very interested in attracting new people to participate. It worked. Of the more thn 20 residents takipg part, only a handful have had previous stage ex- perience. The last time I was in front of a live audience was b ack in Grade 3 as a tree or something. Others have acted in high school or college, but again, thatwas number of years ago. With just a week to go before The Front Pale.; • opens. it • seems as if we'll never remember the lines, get them in the right order, or deliver them with the "punch" they deserve. But guiding us through this learning pro- cess, there is Diane, patient and encourag- ing •.. most of the time .... holding out her hand when we need it; scolding us when we deserve it. This learning process is not restricted to those on stage. Diane herself is learning. This is her first attempt from the other side of the footlights. With some roles under belt, she decided it ws time to try her hand at directing. And she's doing great. She admits that this production was a big undertaking, but confessed that she would never have considered it had it not been for the constant encouragement, reassurance and, helpful advice from June Hill. And through it all, a learning experience. he sta a productions at the two professional theatres in Huron County, The Blyth Festival and Huron Country Playhouse, I thought I knew a lot about theatre. I was mistaken. A lot more goes on than what greets the eye. My eyes are being opened. It takes a lot of time and commitment by professionals to stage a production. It takes a lot more for amateurs. Those you'll see on stage November 5,6,7 and 8 at The Livery are all neighbours. All come from different walks of life: a doc- tor, a waitress, a teacher, an engineer, a secretary, a radio -television reporter, just to name a few. We even have a Huron County newspaper editor playing the part of a reporter. Each one has the normal commiiti►eula of working fulltime ... and then some. Each is giving a little extra to put on the G.L.T. production of The Front Page at The Livery. Each one is enjoying the ex- perience of breaking newiground in their own personal lives. Eachone is enjoying the experience of meeting and working with a variety of different professionals, pulling together to give Goderich something new. I guess the bottom line of what I'm try- ing to say, is get your tickets for The Front Page and watch those on stage. Then the next time the G.L.T. runs an ad looking for new performers, don't say to yourself, "The theatre is aclosed shop with no room for new blood." Say to yourself, "I'd like to try it. Why not dolt?" artha remembers making sets I must say that I enjoyed the crafts fair at Saltford last week - there were so many excellent exhibits by great crafts people from many areas of Southwestern Ontario. We appreciate them coming to our nice Port of Goderich. Many of these people had always wanted to create or just work at these crafts and it made me think back when I had so many dreams. As a kid, I was alone quite a bit - by dodg- ing the other kids. We lived near a small river - we called it the "Big Ditch" - and I would sit beside it making dams and bridges and such until someone called me. Usually when I returned to my -great undertaking, it would be broken or stepped on - what an end to a "great undertaking I always tried again but it usually ended in frustration. But I've often -thought that since my eidefr son became a structural engineer (and other titles),so perhaps he is finishing the things I hast -dreamed about - who knows. r • i • Anyway this has given me a lot of hap- piness knowing he is, doing something he likes to do - and some of my dreams have been carried out. ake a safe investment Safety at work pays. I've never told him about the mud and stick buildings or bridges and other things I tried to create, so he will wonder what I am talking about. Well now, once I,built a tree. It was big aof nd strong, made of many pieces one by two inches. To make the branches I used lots of shorter pieces - used bolts to hold them in any shape we wanted. Papier-mache covered the branches - at the leaves, bran - cher of cedar trees - were attahced. Oh, by the• way, the branches were turn- ed upside down - you know how cedars droop down. Well, I stood them up and they really looked like leaves in the theatre lights. They looked gfeat. I must ask Ruth Leonard the year we first used it. She has a great memory for such things - especially the Goderich Little Theatre past. Another time we needed some lilac trees. Can you see doing it with a brush? I bought a small paint roller about three in- ches long. That little roller made the greatest leaves and flowers you ever saw. The set was beautiful. You know, you can really enjoy helping to get sets ready for GLT -there are lots of little jobs and big ones too, that need workers. So many have asked. when we leave for the South ... I love the fall, but didn't ex- pect so much rain. We lost lots of the tree colours - London has a beautiful showing now. So, near Christmas is our time to go. My first trip down was rain; fog, heat and hotter; creepy things, rust and rot. I was not impressed. Later I flew down into sunshine; everything seemed bright and clean. and I loved it. • • The people I was staying with were both working, the children at school and I was free to go anywhere - except over the bridge. They said,"Mother, if you cross one of these bridges we will never be able to find, you." That was an ultimatum. I didn't cross any bridges. I drove all over the area. It was wonderful. Along Casperson Beach, you can find sharks' teeth and hundreds of other things from the sea. Venice Beach, for some reason I can't recall, has huge and tiny sharks' teeth wash up on the shore. Real early in the morning you can catch the big ones - they are worth a lot of money. No other beach is quite as lucky I understand. One' morning I met a lady from Naples - much farther south of Venice - and she said they had to some, to Venice for sharks' teeth for their shop. But Venice didn't have any of the big beautiful shells - and so it, goes. Our last weekend was wonderful - friends took us to London to see our son Donald at University Hospital - in for an eye operation(. He was well, and happy to see us. I certainly enjoyed the trip as I haven't gone to London for seven or eight years. You just have to love some friends. We have so many freinds and we love them all. Have a good weekend. Enjoy each day. Love, Martha Sale starh Sut.. Nov. 1 of 7 Ellam. till Wad..
