Trabatha wonders why
she has to go to school
by Colleen Osborn
Dear Colleen: imilvommilmommu
Why do we have to go to school?
. Tabatha KIDS
Dear Tabatha:
We have to go to school so that we can
learn and get an education. If we don't go to
school we would work at home. It's the law,
too.
Dear Advisor:
I am having a problem with my cat bring-
ing home birds and putting them at the bot-
tom of the stairs.
Yours truly,
Dear Ben:
Cats love tahunt birds... When he brings the
birds, it's a gift. You cannot stop tern, but
you can, put a bell around his neck to warn
the birds.
Dear Advisor:
1 am interested in finding out how you go
about getting involved in MBX racing.

This week kindergarten class 1 read the
Three Billy Goats Gruff and made stick
puppets. They also helped make some
good applesauce.
• Mrs. Ottewell's Grade 3 class had an ex-
citing week with two guests. Mrs. Deb
- Heslinga from the board office taught the
— children to write creatively using the
SCAMPER methods, and Mrs. Graham,
art co-ordinator taught a lesson on draw-
ing people. The students also had a hotdog
lunch with special desserts sent by Mrs.
Faber, Mrs. Daer and Mrs. Dawson.
Mrs. Tebbutt's Grade 6 class had Mr.
' Wilkins visit their room in science period
to show them how a block and tackle is us-
ed. Mr. Wilkins could pull Mrs. Tebbutt
across the room with a black and tickle.
Book Four poster winners from Mrs.
Tebbutt's Grade 6 class were first prize,
Heather Jefferson; second prize, Barb
Nivens; and third prize, Adrianne Schultz.
Mrs. Mathers' Grade 1 class is
thoroughly enjoying their first reader.
Each day they are busy making pictures
and letters for their friends„ They mail
those in the classroom post office.
This class is paired up this year with
Mrs. Scott's Grade 4 class for buddy
reading - a time anxiously awaited by the
Grade 1 class.
Brookside Sports -
Students have now completed their
senior soccer houseleagues. Team 1, Deb-

Crabbers have tied for first place. Con-
gratulations to elf, members of both teams.
All four Brookside soccer teams trayell-

On October 16, Brookside's cross-

boys' class; Warren Andrew was first in
the intermediate boys' class; and Warren
Andrew was first in the intermediate boys'
class. Joyce McWhinney was first in the in-
termediate girls' class. Congratulations to
all team members.
Mrs. Clark's Grade 3 class is slithering
through its monster theme, reading and
writing all manner of "monstery" things.
It has been extremely difficult because the
room has slime hanging everywhere.
On Friday, they made super ugly paper
mache monsters by working in groups
with the help of Mrs. Connie Black and
Mrs. Monique Bleeker.
Students have also begun their in-
dividualized reading programs, adding to
the bookworm on the wall as they read and
write about books they select. The
bookworm is growing.
This week for 'introducing", the
sttidents are introducing Joseph
Buchanan.
Brookside Volunteers
A very special part of Brookside through
the years has been the volunteer program
co-ordinated by Mrs. Mary Sere, school
resource teacher.
Mothers, dads, grandparents and other
members of the Brookside cotrununity
have become a sharing link between home
and school, helping to make so many "ex-
tras" possible.
Brookside volunteers have been seen do-
ing any or all of the folliwng from time to
t'me• listening to youngsters read, carving
pumpkins, making wallpaper books for
young authors, cooking hotdogs, tramping
through the bush, talking about WM safe-
ty, mixing up wallpaper paste for paper
mache, recording dictated stories, helping
with centre activities,, and sometimes just
being the person with time to share for a
smile and a hug.
This year Brookside welcomes Marie
Webster, Brenda Wylds, Judy Smyth, Bev
Weaver, Joan Black, Claudia Baskerville,
Celia Aitchison, Connie Black, Monique
Bleeker and Karen Webster as volunteers.
PD Day
Friday, October 24 will be a professional
development day for all Huron County
teachers. Elementary teachers will be at-
tending workshops in Exeter. Students will
not attend classes on that day.
