The GDCI senior Vikings clinched first
place and home field advantage in the
Huron -Perth football conference by
defeating the Exeter South Huron Pan-
thers 8-0 Thursday in Exeter.

The Vikings came up with a typical
Viking -type game on Thursday. They
played solid, disciplined football, leaving
little to chance.

interior running game.
The Viking special teams also put
together solid efforts to round out the team
performance.
All of the scoring came in the first half.
Wayne Nivins, the Vikings' hard running
tailback, scored the only touchdown on a
second quarter 10 yard off tackle run.
Nivins was again the workhorse of the Vik-
ing backfield, carrying the ball 43 times
for 208 yards.
Both the offensive line and the backs did
a tine job of blocking. The other Viking
points came from a 25 yeard single by
Shawn Larder on a missed field goal at-
tempt and the extra point, also kicked by
Larder, following Nivin's touchdown.
Despite the low score of the game, the
Vikings did spend a considerable amount
of time close to the Panthers'. goal line.
Three times the Vikings were within the 10
yard line but failed to score. A pass in-
terception and a fumble wiped out two of
their opportunities. The other was negated
by what the Viking coaching staff labelled
"a stupid coaching call."

There was plenty of action in front of Goderich Sailors goaltender Randy Gaynor Friday as
ren Doak handles a Bear in front of the net. Goderich jumped into a 3-1 lead and settled for
the tie. On Sunday the Sailors defeated Walkerton 9-7 for their first win of the season. Jim

tie, win weekend games
The Golerich Sailors had a successful
weekend in OHA Junior "C" hockey.
Friday night at home, the Sailors skated
to a 3-3 tie with the Port Elgin Bears. Sun-
day in Walkerton, the Sailors"defeated the
Blackhawks 9-7.
The results leave the Sailors with a
record of one win, one loss and two ties in
their first four league.games.
Their next action will be here Friday
night at 8:30 p.m. when the undefeated
Hanover Barons, last season's league
champions and the overwhelming
favourites to repeat again this year, come
to town.
Last Friday night's game provided a
good beginning for the Sailor's home
opener as the Sailors and Bears provided
hard-hitting bockey with lots of action, but
no fights.
Coach' Dick Madge and his assistant
Dale Duncan are trying to keep their team
on the ice rather than in the penalty box
and the strategy seems to be working.
Friday's game couldn't have been much
closer. The score was tied 1-1 after the first
period and 3-3 after the second while the
third period was scoreless.
John Thompsomled the Sailors with two
goals and Trevor Erb scored the other
Goderich goal.
Joe Flarity, Jim Craddock and Jamie
Wilson scored for Port Elgin.
The close, exciting game was a crowd-
pleaser and a good-sized crowd was on
hand to see it. Sailor goaltender Randy
Gaynor was quite steady in the nets.
In . Walkerton, the Sailors got a three-
goal performancer,from defenceman Jim
Beattie. Pete Willems and Chris Sideris
had two goals and Shawn Larder and
Trevor Erb had one each.
• Erb's came into an empty net at the
buzzer. Coach Dick Madge praised Erb's
efforts and his influence on the, first year
players. In the tense moments, the rookies
tend to forget their assignments, explained
Madge.
Goderich Midgets remain
The Goderich Legion Midgets remain
undefeated in league play following a win
and a tie last weekend.
On October 17 the Midgets travelled to
Lucan and emerged with a 10-10 tie. Darryl
Durnin led the way with three goals and
two assists.
The midgets played a sloppy game
which saw them take a 3-1 lead, only to fall
behind by a score of 7-4. Goderich fought
back and gained a 10-8 advantage, but
again Lucan tied it up for the final 10-10
score.
Scaring for Goderich were Darryl Dur-
nin with three goals, Byron Bowman with
two and Rod Nurse with two. Dave Dun-
can, Wayne Nivins and Barry Thompson
each spored a goal to round out the
scoring.
Assisting on the Goderich goals were
Durnin with two, Bowman with two, Mark
Cauchi, Gary Erband goalie Greg
Townsend.
On October 18 the Midgets played host to
the Exeter team and defeated them 6-2.
Neil Rodger led the attack with • two

goals in a game where the team played
good solid hockey.
Goaltender Jay Williamson played very
well in allowing only two goals. The
defense was also solid, coming off the high
scoring tie with Lucan.
Mike Radford opened the scoring for the
Midgets when he took a pass from Dave
Duncan early in the first period. Neil
Rodger scored his first of the night on an
unassisted effort.
In the second period, Exeter put one in,
but Rod Nurse relied to the goal with one
of his own after completing a three way
passing play with Jeff Boyd and Duncan.
In the third period Exeter again opened
the scoring to make it 3-2, but Goderich
held them off and scored three times to

"They start giving the puck away and
getting us into trouble in our own end, but
Trevor helps provide the leadership we
need to overcome these problems," says
Madge..
The Sailors led 4-1 afterone period, but.
the score was tied 6-6 after two periods:
The Sailors came on strong outscoring the
Blackhawks 3-1 in the third period.
Goderich outshot Walkerton 56-30 in the
game.
Jeff Dupee started in the Goderich goal
but had to leave after suffering a shoulder
injury. Randy Gaynor went the rest of the

Rodger accomplished his second two
goal game of the season when he scored 16
seconds after the Exeter goal. Gary Erb
and Mark Cauchi assisted on the goal.
Mike Beange scored his first of the season
with six minutes remainiong as Durnin
assisted and with just over a minute to
play Cauchi scored his first, assisted by
Bowman.
The Goderich Legion Midgets began their
1986-87 regular season on a winning note last
Saturday with a 6-3 victgory ovewr Parkhill.
This year's team has a new look as there
are only eight returning players. Seven of
last year's Bantams made the team after
beating out several players from last year.
The coaches have decided to go with youth.
On Saturday, Parkhill scored first but
rookie Barry Thompson tied the game con-
verting a pass from Mark Cauchi and Dave
Duncan. That was all the scoring in the first
period. Goderich looked a little sloppy as er-
rant passes and shots prevented them from

Junior tennis clinics were held by Stuart
Davidson and Jan Davidson. On Labour
Day weekend, the club championships
were held with the following winners:
junior boys, Jean Paul Cauchi; in-
termediate girls, Susan Murphy; in-
termediate boys, Jason O'Neill; mixed
doubles, Susan Murphy and Stuart
Davidson.
President Tom Fincher accepted sug-
gestions for the future. Since no one
volunteered to be on the executive, he
challenged all members to get behind the
club as a whole. Otherwise, the tennis
members will be at the mercy of the board
or there will be no tennis club in 1987.
Skaters pass

Goderich wins

On October 17 the Bantams travelled to
Lucan, and were defeated 8-3.
Goderich managed to score one goal in
each of the three periods, with George
Sideris scoring in the first and third and
Greg Alcock scoring in the second. O'Shea
also assisted on the second period goal.
On the following day, October 18, the
Bantams were back on the winning track
as they defeated Exeter 4-2 at home.
The Bantams got another strong perfor-

two goals in the third period and one in the
first. Brian Lane also contributed to the
Goderich scoring with a second period
goal.
Shawn Talbot had three goals to lead the
Goderich Elevator Bantams to an 8-4 vic-

Andre Cauchi was responsible for the on-
ly first period scoring when he put one in
the net for Goderich at 1:17 into the game.
However, by the end of the second

begin their second period scoring drive

Talbot,. Greg Alcock, Andre Cauchi, Tim
Harrison and Greg Crawford.
With just over three minutes gone in the

scoring more.
Goderich went ahead by two in the first
six minutes of the second period when
Wayne Nivins scored from Darryl Durnin
and Byron Bowman. Less than a minute
later Darryl Durnin scored a picture perfect
goal by skating through the 'parkhill
defence. Neil Rodger and Bowman assisted
on the goal.
Durnin scored another goal later in the
period between goals by Parkhill when
again he skated through the Parkhill
defence to make it 4-3. Ian MacKinnon
assisted on Durnin's goal this time.
In the third period Goderich preserved the
win by scoring twice. Neil Rodger scored
both goals, the first unassisted and the other
assisted by Duncan and Durnin.
However, the win proved costly as
defenceman Mark )3urbine went down with
a broken wrist.
