The Viking special teams also put together solid efforts to round out the team performance. All of the scoring came in the first half. Wayne Nivins, the Vikings' hard running tailback, scored the only touchdown on a second quarter 10 yard off tackle run. Nivins was again the workhorse of the Vik- ing backfield, carrying the ball 43 times for 208 yards. Both the offensive line and the backs did a tine job of blocking. The other Viking points came from a 25 yeard single by Shawn Larder on a missed field goal at- tempt and the extra point, also kicked by Larder, following Nivin's touchdown. Despite the low score of the game, the Vikings did spend a considerable amount of time close to the Panthers'. goal line. Three times the Vikings were within the 10 yard line but failed to score. A pass in- terception and a fumble wiped out two of their opportunities. The other was negated by what the Viking coaching staff labelled "a stupid coaching call." s ro Eight attend tennis club's annual meet SPORTS SHORTS ?AGE. 8A-GODERICH SIGNAL STAR, OCTOBER 22, 1986 'WEDNESDAY, . _ . Last Friday night's game provided a good beginning for the Sailor's home opener as the Sailors and Bears provided hard-hitting bockey with lots of action, but no fights. Coach' Dick Madge and his assistant Dale Duncan are trying to keep their team on the ice rather than in the penalty box and the strategy seems to be working. John Thompsomled the Sailors with two goals and Trevor Erb scored the other Goderich goal. Joe Flarity, Jim Craddock and Jamie Wilson scored for Port Elgin.
