Support group
presents brief
to Task Force
When the provincial task force on the im-
plementation of midwifery was in London
last week, the Midwifery Support Group of
Midwestern Ontario accompanied by
Sheatre, was there.
The task force will be taking a full report
their findings in 10 cities across Ontario, to
the Hon. Murray Elston, Minister of
Health, in March 1987.
The provincial government has an-
nounced that midwifery - now without any
legal status - will be regulated in Ontario
and incorporated into the health care
system. The task force's study will make
recommendations as to how it can be done
best.
The Midwestern Ontario group includes
some representatives from Huron County
who aro=interested in tate provii ee'aaecep-
tance of the practice of nudwitery and.
home birthing.
The presentation made by the
Midwestern Ontario group favoured self-
regulation for midwives and a direct entry
program leading to a Bachelor of Science
degree in Midwifery.
A scroll of pictures of the families in the
support group who are primarily residents
of Huron County, was presented to Mary
Eberts, a Toronto lawyer and chairperson
of the task force. She assured the group the
scroll would be hung m their Toronto
office.
The Midwestern group used a human
sculpture on the topic of birth and a bir-
thing mosaic performed by Sheatre and
members of the support group to em-
phasize their point that midwifery has a
real and important place in today's socie-
ty. The group was congratulated on its uni-
que and thoughtful presentation to the task
force.
Many individuals, doctors and midwives
gave their views as well as other support
group.
The University of Western Ontario
Obstetrics and Gynecology Department
felt it should be possible for current mid-
wives to be licensed after completing the
education requirements that might be
lacking in their experience.
The Registered Nurses Assistants
fovoured autonomy for midwives, keeping
midwifery separate from nursing.
There was some concern expressed by a
Sarnia physician at the London meeting.
Dr. Bob Brown, president of the medical
staff at St. Joseph's Hospital in Sarnia,
recommended a test run at at least one
hospital in the province to show whether or
not midwifery should be expanded in
Ontario.
Brown said a, test is needed because
there is some question in the minds of a
some medical professionals about whether
or not midwifery is safe in all situations.
He warned that if midwifery were in-
troduced in Ontario without being tested,
doctors: rmght refuse to co-operate.
ChatrmaniE-berts-tended to agree that
midwifery needs a test run, and she said •
the two toughest decisions for the task
force will be how to train midwives and
whether they should work in hopsitals,
homes or clinics specializing in births.
London midwife Edythe Johnston -
Brophy said midwives are "an adjunct to
physicians" and should assist in hospital °
births.
The consensus of opinion. among sup-
porters was that the midwife should assist
the expectant mother throughout her
pregnancy - and should be with her at the
time of birth, whether in hospital or at
home.
Legion Ladies
hold meeting
On October 14, 61 members of the Legion
Ladies' Auxiliary met for their general
meeting.
Comrade Joy Wilkin was duly installed as
a member, and past president Laura
McLarty was presented with her bar and a
gift of appreciation for her dedicated leader-
ship over the past two years.
Thanks to community involvement, the '
ladies' rummage and bake sale on October 4
raised $378. Donations were made to the
Survival Through Friendship House and
Huron Day Centre for the Homebound.
Preparations are well underway for the
Snowflake Bazaar to be held on November 6.
Several euchre and dart teams are advan-
cing to thedistrict level.
The microwave cooking demonstration
which was held on October 15 had good at-
tendance with close to 100 people present.
Comtade Esther Blackwell won the
mystery prize before president Marg Baker
officially closed the meeting.

"Government must be better able to "
sense the emerging public agenda. The
earlier government can identify trends in
public expectations, the more effectively it
will provide, through consultation and
public dialogue, opportunities for issue
clarification and in-depth analysis."
I included these reports' comments on
communication as food for thought. Do we
feel the same in Huron County about some
of thesepecific issues as the people in the
reports feel?
I would appreciate your comments.
