People
Joanne's music is positive expression
by Corinne Boyle
People have their own ways of express-
ing their individual thoughts and feelings
about the world and life in general. Joanne
Dust's outlet for expression is through
song.
Since high school, Joanne has been voic-
ing her feelings in the words she writes.
"It's always been for myself—an expres-
sion of what I believe or what I feel."
The local songwriter recently had one of
her songs, "Looking for Lovers" recorded
by Doug Cameroli, a Toronto musician, on,
his tape, "C'mon Rise Up."
The tape is only available through the
Baha'i Distribution Book Store and can be
ordered by anyone through the Baha'i
community. Being a member of the Baha'i
community for 10 years is an influence for
T,1.011.,110 UAW... "The major
influence is just life.
"What I believe wouldn't be different if 1
wasn't Baha'i. Most of it (her music)
doesn't sound religious but there's certain-
ly that inspiration."
Joanne came from a very musical fami-
ly and began writing songs when she was
in high school. "There was music all
around, so it seemed like the natural thing
to do."
"As a teenage, music was my outlet.
What I wrote conveyed what I was feeling
at the time. Music I write at different
times in my life has a different feeling to
it."
Joanne says she's written about 25 or 30
songs altogether, but the bulk of those
were written within the last couple of
years. And, the strongest message that's
been coming across in her latest songs has
been one of optimism.
As a mother of four children, two
daughers, five and six years old, and twin
sons, four years old, Joanne says her
"large, young family" is an inspiration.
Being at home in Goderich full time, she
knows it is not easy raising children today.
"It's difficult to raise positive -minded
children in such a negative world. I believe
the world will be here forever and the
world will shape up, but I don't feel it's go-
ing to be easy."
So, through her songs, Joanne hopes to
convey this message that life should be ap-
proached.in a more positive light. "I hope
that feeling of a positive attitude toward
life and the world, comes through in my
music. Concentrate on the good in people,
even when you have to look hard to find
it.
„
She stresses 'the positive in her music
because she believes, "Whatever feeling
you have in your heart, music will
strengthen, it. Music is a product of dif-
ferent times. For example, I don't like the
idea of every high school having a mar-
ching band. The marching band was a pro-
duct of war. That's why I don't like the
idea— because we shouldn't be steering
children into that frame of mind:"
So, Joanne promotes peace and hope for
mankind. She thinks people are living in
too much fear of the fpture and she would
like to reassure them that life will continue
and to concentrate on the positive aspects
of life.
Local musician and songwriter, Joanne Durst, has had one of her songs recorded by Toron-
to based musician, Doug Cameron. (photo by Corrine Boyle)
Up to this point Joanne has performed
mostly locally, at small concerts and for
friends. She met Doug Cameron and Jack
Lenz, who co-produced "C'mon Rise Up",
through a musicians' network in Toronto.
She got to know them during the last two
years at workshops she attended in
Toronto:
In May, the Baha'i community asked
Cameron to come to Goderich for a con-
cert. At that time, Cameron heard some of
Joanne's songs and asked her to send him
tape of "Looking for.Lovers."
'There was something about that song
he liked," says Joanne. "It's a compliment
and a real honor to be recorded, by him and
the other musicians on the tape too.
They're some of the' best in Canada.
A lot of times it doesn't make sense to
Joanne why Cameron happened to pick
one of her songs. "There are a lot of really
talented people in Goderich. Sometimes I
don't understand why it happened, but I
hope it continues."
As for Joanne's future plans, she hopes
to become more proficient as a musician.
She plays guitar, piano and flute, but
would like to improve her knowledge of the
guitag and is considering buying an elec- .
tronic keyboard sometime soon. "I'd like
to be able to fool around with all those
gadgets and make all kinds of different
sound combinations."
And who is Joanne's biggest fan? Why,
her husband, Jim. "He's not a musician,
but he's very creative," says Joanne. "I
think two creative minds are a good com-
bination. He's a good critic, although
sometimes I'd rather not hear what he has
to say. But, a lot of times he has good
ideas."
