Laura White
recalls horse
buggy
days
BY CORINNE BOYLE
Laura White says she remembers a lot of
crazy things that have happened during her
90 years. One incident sticks out in her
mind.
She remembers when, as a young girl, she
took the mail route with a horse and buggy.
She laughs now as she thinks of the first
time a car passed her buggy on the road.
She wasn't ready for the reaction of the
horse. It startled, upset the cart, and sent
pieces of mail flying everywhere.

became used to passing vehicles, whenever
a car came along, 'she Would pull into the
closest laneway to avoid a repeat
performance.
Friends and relatives helped Laura
celebrate her 90th birthday on Thursday,
October 2, at her home in Goderich.
Laura was born in Milverton in 1896. She
was one of five children of William and An-
nie Thafner. When she was young, her fami-
ly moved from Milverton where her father
owned a hotel, to a farm in Walton.
The family moved at the same time that
the first train ran from Milverton to Walton
and although all the furniture was
transported by rail, she and her family
travelled to their new home by buggy.
Laura married James A. White of Ben -
miller, now deceased. The couple moved to
Goderich about 1920. They had five
children: Anna Patterson, Embro; Ida
White, Goderich; Gordon (deceased); Ger-
tie Mutton,, Woodstock; Fred White,
Goderich. There are 20 grandchildren and 20
great-grandchildren.
A homemaker most of her life, Laura's
favourite pastimes included making quilts
and hooking matts. She can no longer do
these things, but has recently started knit-
ting again and enjoys playing card games
with her friends.
Although Laura is deaf, she com-
municates easily as her friends and family
write their messages down. Her daughter
Ida says they go through a terrific amount
. of paper.
Besides best wishes from many visitors
during the day, Laura received certificates
of congratulations from Premier David
Petersen, presented by Jack Riddell, Prime
Minister Brian Mulroney, Governor-
General Jeanne Sauve and MP Murray
Cardiff.
