The Huron Real Estate Board sponsored its sixth Private Property
Week, a week set aside to raise awareness about property rights
and over 700 pieces of legislation that affect the right to own and
maintain property. Following a breakfast meeting Monday,
members of the board and local political dignitaries reviewed in-
formation at the boards information kiosk at the Suncoast Mall.

Property rights stressed during week
Canadians pretty much take for granted
the right to own and maintain property.
It's a Canadian tradition that has been
an integral part of our heritage, but it is a
tradition that the Ontario Real Estate
Association (OREA) would like to see
preserved and entrenched in the Canadian
Constitution.
The need to honour that heritage and
preserve property rights is the theme ;)f
Private Property Week, being sponsord
by the Huron Real Estate Board October5-
13. Sponsored by the provincial associa-
tion, Private Property Week is designed to
raise the profile, and `encourage the
awareness of, property rights in the
province.
The week has grown to encompass the
efforts of more than 100 real estate boards
across Canada while the OREA represents
almost 50 boards and over 30,000 real
estate professionals.
Locally, the Huron Real Estate Board
launched the sixth Private Property Week
with a breakfast meeting in Goderich Mon-
day that included local political
dignitaries, real estate and related
business professionals, Huron -Bruce MP
Murray Cardiff and Jim Fitzgerald,
executive -assistant to Huron -Middlesex
MPP and Agriculture Minister, Jack
Riddell.
Cardiff told the meeting that the federal
government is committed to the entrench-
ment of property rights in the Constitution.
"The government and the prime minister
favor the entrenchment of those rights,"
he said. "The right to own property is pro-
tected by the Canadian Bill of Rights
established by John Diefenbaker."
One of the founders of Private Property
Week and a. director of the OREA, Ted
Mouradian of St. Catharines, told the
group that rather than take an adversarial
approach, it must be proactive in the fight
for property rights.
"We elect 'officials of government and
they try to do the best job they caiut,
they have to have information to make
decisions," he explained., "We have to get
that information to them. A big problem is
that even for many laws that affect us, we
just sit back. And if we don't like it we go to
the politicians and say they're doing a rot-
ten job. They just react to what they are
being told."
Mduradian explained that the OREA
does not take an adversarial position, sug-
gesting it doesn't produce positive results
but that through such awarehess cam-
paigns as Private Property Week, it is at-
tempting to create an environment of co-
operation.
Claiming that provincial associations
could be a positive force, Mouradian urged
members of the Huron Board to be active
in the affairs of the community.
"You have to be aware. You have to get
involved and know about issues in the com-
munity," he said. "More input on our part
means good legislation and more input
means a more informed decision."
More than 700 pieces of enacted legisla-
tion affect property rights in some form
and Mouradian told the meeting that
"most are good, some are bad and some
are terrible."
The Canadian Chamber- of Commerce
has endorsed the OREA's campaign to en-
trench the property rights of Canadians
and Mouradian said the group must main-
tain a high profile.
Property rights were left our of the
charter in 1980-81 in order to win federal -
provincial and political agreement, on
other points. The Federal and Provincial
Attorney's General have established a
task force on the matter for presentation to
the first ministers.
