Council defeats day care
for Goderich by one vote
from page 1
reduce the deficit.
Coun. Bill Clifford spoke against the mo-
tion saying that he represents more than
the parents present at the meeting.
"We are elected to represent everyone
and I've heard from many, many tax-
payers who don't support day care," he
said.
Though he said he recognized the need
for day care and had no objections to the
start-up costs, Clifford said he was con-
cerned about the ongoing operating costs.
"It sounds good to say those details can
be worked out but those people using the
facilities should be paying for the short-
fall," he said.
Coun. Jim Searls agreed with Clifford
saying he too' would only agree with day
,care if it were self-supporting.
"I cannot agree on it being a burden on
taxpayers for years to come. We all know
people with their sewers flooded and their
basements flooded and, we have to deal
with them too," he said.
He added that all the day care centres in
London are privately -run..
"Anything run by the government
always loses money," he said.
Deputy -Reeve John Doherty said he
didn't believe Administrator Larry Mc-
Cabe had complied with all of council's re-
quests from the last meeting saying there
was no meeting with the Squash Club, or
surrounding townships and no considera-
tion of insurance costs.
McCabe answered that the proposed
renovations to the Mini Community Centre
would in no way affect the Squash Club and
therefore a meeting was not necessary.
And the townships have indicated they'll
sit down and discuss the issue once the ad-
ministrative committee works out all the
details.
"If this is such a viable operation, I'm
not sure why the people involved don't '
form a group. They would be eligible for
the same grants as we are," said Doherty..
Donald responded saying a private non-
profit group would not be eligible for
capital grants.

Jazzvox asks. Goderich
council for financial help
Jazzvox, a vocal group at Goderich
District Collegiate Institute, has asked
Goderich council for financial assistance.
Its request was referred to the ad-
ministrative committee.
"To my knowledge they have never
come to the town for assistance. Yet they
are some fo the best examples of am-
bassadors of good will for Goderich and a
youth organization worth supporting and
promoting whole-heartedly," says
Heather Lyons in a letter to council.
The group requested financial help
towards a workshop it is attending on Oct.
24 in Michigan.
Members of Jazzvox raised $600 each to
attend a competition in Vancouver at Expo"
'86 by selling pizzas, working at part-time
jobs and singing for donations at public
functions. '

A 7 to 1 recorded dote passed a motion to
pay for the sodding and seeding of the
southside boulevards between Eldon
Street and Bayfield Road on Suncoast
Drive at Goderich council's Sept. 29
meeting.
"It's our responsibility because we cash-
ed the letter of credit. We may have pro-
crastinated since when we finally cashed
it; there wasn't enough money to do it. But,
I don't think irt'good con§cience',we can
now turn over the work to the citizens,"
said Coun. Bill Clifford.
Council received a letter from several
residents of Suncoast Drive asking that the
boulevard between the sidewalk and the
curb be seeded with a minimum of six in-
ches of topsoil.
"It is our understanding that the town of
Goderich forclosed on Suncoast Estatesry.
Limited and is now the legal owner," they;:
said in the letter.

Drums and rhythm instruments from
around the world are the focus of the
dramatic and exciting first event of Blyth
Festival's 1986/87 Kid's. Series. The show is
appropriately called Drums! and is being
held on Saturday, October 4 at 2 .pm, at
Blyth Memorial Hall.
The drummer/musician/performer is Bill
Usher, who during the show surrounds
himself with dozens of drums, continually
changing costumes and masks to create
stories with sounds and rhythms. He enter-
tains the audience with everything from
New Orleans Jazz and rock 'n roll to music
and beats from Africa and the Carribean.
The show consists of a series of vignettes
in which he tells stories about his ex-
periences with different cultures as he en-
countered them travelling around the world.
Asa musician he has had the opportunity to
learn drumming from people for whom the
drum beat is not just, a rhythm, but a
language.
A fascination with the great advances in
electronic music has led Mr. Usher to in-
clude some high technology in the way he
produces and synthesizes the sounds
onstage. He demonstrates how basic drum
sounds and rhythms are transformed for the.
recording studio and for live performance
with the aid of this electronic technology.
The script for Drums! was co -written by
Robert Morgan, winner of the 1982 in-
augural Chalmers Children's Play Award.
