Go erich man to compete innational

BY SUSAN HUNDERTMARK
When an Ontario mine rescue team
enters the national mine rescue competi-
tion for the first time this year, Brian
MacKenzie, of Goderich will be one of
eight men representing Ontario.
The -captain of the mine rescue team
from the Domtar Sifto Salt Mine in town,
MacKenzie left for Sudbury on Friday for
a 10 day training session before he and the
rest of the Ontario team leave for
Naniamo, B.C. for a two day competition
against teams from nine other provinces.
"It's the 20th national competition but
the first time Ontario has sent a team. It
will be wild if we win it. I'm really excited
about it," he says.
Though he's never been involved in an
actual rescue after a real mine disaster,
MacKenzie has been participating in mine
rescue competitions for three of the five
years he's worked at the Goderich salt
mine as a scaler and back -checker. Of
three district competitions and one provin-
cial competition, he's been captain for
three of the them.
The competitions begin with a written
examination. After that, each team has its
turn reporting to the mine rescue room
where a briefing officer outlines the details
of a "disaster" including whether it "in-
volves an explosion, an electrical or equip
ment fire, how many people are to be
rescued and what is a suggested plan of at-
tack. Because most mines in the country
are multi-level, unlike the Goderich salt
mine, the disasters often involve more
than one level.
The team will then prepare the rescue
equipment which could include breathing
apparatus, a gas detector, a flame safety
lamp, a stretcher and first aid supplies.
Choosing the proper equipment in ap-
propriate amounts is taken into considera-
tion by the judges.
Once underground, the captain is the
person to make the decisions. The team
will go about their rescue of the "victims"
and report on their progress from every
phone location.
During the rescue, every team member
must watch for the special hazards of the
disaster such as methane gas levels, the
presence of other gases, fire and cave-ins.
Sometimes, a team's planned rescue route
will be blocked by a cave-in and the team
must find a way around the obstacle.
The amount of time each team takes to
make the rescue is also under considera-
tion. A team is penalized if it goes beyond
the average time plus a five minute grace
period.
To make sure that no team has an ad-
vantage over another, the teams are lock-
ed up in isolation before they perform their
