Prison Art is on display at the. Jail
Approximately 70 works of art, created by
parolees and inmates from penitentaries
across Canada, will be on display at the
Huron Historic Jail until the end of October.
Kim Tisdale from the Jail notes that
response to the show, which began
September 3, has been very good.
"We've had many people in wondering
whether' some of the pieces are for sale,"
she says, noting that inquiries must be
directed to the Prison Arts Foundation in
Toronto.
The foundation is a non-profit organiza-
tion founded in 1969, to encourage parolees
and inmates to express themselves in the
arts. The original members ran a Christmas
Card contest in the foundation's early years
but since then it has expanded its boun-

drama and music.

Manpower is pro
Because the shortage of manpower at
the Goderich police officer is a problem,
especially during the summer months, the
Goderich police commission decided at its
Sept. 3 meeting to send a letter to the
Solicitor General Ken Keyes with statistics
compiled by Police Chief Pat King.
"We should discuss very seriously the
shortage of personnel. But, long before I
would agree to increase the staff, I would
want a study done to make sure we're get-
blem for police
ting our full potential," said Mayor Eileen
Palmer.
Ken McGee said he wondered if
Goderich was suffering from a "summer
syndrome" with more people and addi-
tional activities causing problems for the
police.
"With our emphasis on broadening the
tourist base, we're obviously succeeding
but we're not distinctive or unique in.

to take fine arts courses in universities
across the country. Some have become well-
known artists.
The show, which was housed in a tractor -
trailer until the vehicle was demolished,
completed a tour through Manitoba before
coming to Goderich. This is the second year
that the exhibition has shown at the Jail and
it is expected to become an annual event.

Chief King added that the development
of St. Christopher's Beach could be a
headache for the police.
Mayor Palmer suggested that an impar-
tial party, such as the Ontario police com-
mission be approached to study the per-
sonnel situation in Goderich.
The issue. will be discussed in more
depth at the commission's Sept. 22
meeting.
