For the theatre -goer with an appetite for
entertainment that's light, sweet and
somewhat flaky, ,``Cakewalk", now play-
ing at the Blyth Festival Theatre until.
Sept. 13, is guaranteed to hit the spot.
Revolving around five cake-baking
h con-
testants competing, some
em
ruthlessly, for the grand prize of a trip to
Paris, Colleen Curran's "Cakewalk"
mixes an amusing batch of characters to
adequately satisfy an audience's craving
for comedy.
The funniest of the bunch is Ruby Abel,
played hilariously by Lorna Wilson. Self-
righteously dressed in her Den Mother
uniform so she can set a good example for
the young cubs and scouts in town, Ruby is
less than fair and trustworthy in her deter-
mination to win the competition.
Ruby, whose father told her mother he'd
smother her with jewels of which Ruby is
one, might more appropriately be named
Emerald since she turns green with envy
everytime another contestant arrives with
a cake. Throughout the play, she plots and
schemes against the safe entry of each
cake in the contest.
But, there is a soft centre inside the crus-
ty shell of Ruby. When left alone with her
beloved Sousa march music blaring on the
radio, Ruby high -steps around the room as
the master baton twirler she once;, 'vas.
And, caught in the let by another contes-
tant, she tells a heart 'ending story of how
she lost the "thrill of the twirl."
As sweet as Ruby is sour, Sister Vivien
Leigh Cleary (Marlane O'Brien), whose
mother, of course, saw "Gone with the
Wind" 22 times, enters her decadently
delicious chocolate cheesecake in the•.
contest.
Because she's a nun dressed in layman's
clothing, the inevitable romantic com-
plications occur when an absent-minded
archeologist who also bakes, wanders into
the contest and into her life.. -
Taylor Abbettr g ( Ric . Reid), whose'
greatest talent as an archeologist is his un -

During one of the highlights of the play,."Cakewalk" by Colleen Curran playing at the Blyth
Festival until Sept. 13, Ruby Abel, played by Lorna Wilson, winds up with a chocolate
cheescake and threatens to let Martha Britch, played by Heather Esdon, have it in the face.

caTlny knack for finding bones buried by
dogs, is funniest as he wanders in the
background trying to find his way back to
the contestants' meeting room. As Taylor,
Reid plays a nerd to perfection. ••
Though the romantic attraction between
the tWo. is cute, the dialogue sometimes
becomes stilted and tedious with lines as
uninspired as Leigh saying, "I teach
Grade 4" and Taylor answering, "Oh
yeah, I was in Grade 4 once."
Leigh's friend Martha (Heather Esdon)
is a one-time hippie looking for respec-
tability by entering the contest. Her main
role is to take on the villain, Ruby by poin-

One of the highlights play
when Martha tells Ruby she is a disgrace
to Den Motherdom and should be court-
martialled and Ruby responds by snat-
ching up Leigh's chocolate cheesecake and
threatening to let Martha have it.
I must admit to being disappointed when
the cake is rescued. It must have been
tempting with all the does icing -covered propsts
but the playwrightnot succumb
slapstick and not one cake is thrown.
Claire Crawford and Paulina Gillis play
an upperclass mother Augusta , and her
spoiled brat daughter Tiffany who are bat-
tling over whether or not Augusta can
enter Tiffany's wedding cake in the contest
the day before the wedding. "
The cake is a monstrous creation of pink
and white tackiness topped with the CN
Tower. Though Tiffany complains that the
cake is "a little busy", the cake is a
hilarious replica of Tiffany's pink and
white wedding dress:
The set with its hideous green walls and
cupboards could be any basement of a
public building in a small town and the
Canadian flag in the background is a
reminder that the time is Canada Day.
The radio speaker is a nice touch
especially . when the music it plays helps
• display Ruby's baton -twirling expertise.
But, the mumbled broadcast of Cana -a
Day, events is arlying, l ceAtAgAisrpf n
hard to hear.
"Cakewalk" contains the recipe for an
enjoyable evening of comic entertainment.
After closing in Blyth, it will go on a
month-long tour of Southwestern Ontario.
