Dianne Foster holds the coveted blue ribbon and silver chaffing bowl that her Golden
American Saddlebred, The Flying Doctor, won at the world championships in Ohio on
August 12. The poctor's victory marked the first time a Canadian -owned Golden American
Saddlebred had won a performance division at the championships.

which has turned out .some of the best
Golden American Saddlebreds in the
world.
Dianne began showing horses for other
people 12 years ago. She bought her own
horse in' 1976 "arid hoWd it ;for several
years before taking four years off. In the
interim, she saved up enough money to
buy a "good horse."
The Flying Doctor turned out to be the
"good horse" and she began training and
showing him late in the 1983 season (the
horse -showing season runs from , late
March to October). She showed the Doctor
on the Ontario circuit in the 1984 and 1985
seasons as well and both, times won the
American Saddlehorse Parade Associa-
tion of Ontario championships.
Dianne spends about four hours a day,
six days a week during the season with the
horse, a half hour of which is spent prepar-
ing it in all the necessary areas of competi-
tion. Judges look at the horse's ap-
pearance, its manners, its apparel, and

perhaps most importantly it's movement.
American Sadlebreds' movements are
assessed on their ability to halt and remain
completely motionless, how high they lift
their legs, the tuck of the head, and a
powerful well-balanced motion in the front
and hind quarters.
The Fosters have no problem finding
facilities to train the Flying Doctor. They
own and operate Ravenwood' Stable at
R.R.6 Goderich. They have five horses,
two of which are Golden American Sad-
dlebreds. "They're extremely versatile
horses," says Dianne. "We can use them
for riding lessons, trail riding, showing
and breeding." Though they are dubbed
the "peacocks of the show rung," they
make very good all-round horses.
Though Dianne does much of the train-
ing and showing, she is helped out behind
the scenes by her husband Phil, who helps
with trailering and other preparations.
The two travel to about 15 shows per
season, mostly in Ontario, and hope to
return to the World Championships next
year.
