Improved breeding has made
the difference in OSS times
When the Ontario Sires Stakes program
began in 1974, the aim was to provide
financial incentives, to improve the
harness horse breed in the province. While
Ontario had been producing some nice
race horses, the calibre was far below the
fashionable stock found south of the border
in the United States.
A dozen years have passed since the first
Ontario Sires Stakes event was called to
the post and there's no doubt that the OSS
has advanced the cause of improved.
breeding in the province. The fastest mile
in the initial year of the OSS was 2:01.1.
The current record, set by Mystery Skip-
per at Windsor Raceway in 1984 is 1:55 flat
- a difference of 31 lengths!
But speed is not the only yardstick with
which to measure the success of the
Ontario -sired standardbred. In some
cases, the Ontario-breds are having great
success racing against top U.S.-sired
performers.
Take, for instance, Nadirs Pride. This
three-year-old filly, who has won almost
$300,000 to date for owner Eugene Forbes
of Walkerton, equalled the all-time Cana-
dian record in a Grand Circuit event at
Montreal's Blue Bonnets Raceway earlier
this summer. She 'trotted the Montreal
oval in 1:58.1 - a, time many experts
would have thought impossible for an
Ontario -sired trotting filly just a few years
ago. In that race Nadirs Pride, who is
trained and driven by Owen Sound's Bob
Walker, defeated some outstanding U.S.
performers. As a matter of fact, Nadirs
Pride was followed across the wire by
Armbro Ermine, Kassay, and Alter Ego,
all sired by stallions standing in Ontario!
The other Grand Circuit division that
night at Blue Bonnets was won by another
OSS standout, Shipps Dream. Owned by
Harold Shipp of Mississauga, the daughter
of Dream of Glory, who has won more than
$180,000 this year, was also a handy
winner.
In the -ranks of -the two-year-old colt trot-
ters, C Lewis Lauxmont has been waving
the banner high for the Ontario -sired colts
this year. A son of Cantario Farms'
stallion Balanced Image, C Lewis Laux-
mont became the first Ontario -bred rookie
ONTARIO SIRES STAKES
Fastest Miles (1974-1986)
(up to and including Tues. Aug. 19)
trotter to break the 2:00 speed barrier with
his 1:59.4 victory at Freestate Raceway in
Maryland earlier this month. That effort
followed a strong third-place finish against
the best in the world in the $879,250 Peter
Haughton Memorial at The Meadowlands
in New Jersey in July. In that race, C
Lewis Lauxmont trotted his own mile in
1:58.3 and picked,up $105,510 for his effort.
To date the colt has earned nearly $150,000
in just six lifetime starts.
Another two-year-old colt trotter who
will likely soon get the opportunity to race
against the U.S.-breds is Armbro Fame.
This son of Dream Of Glory has been
perfect in every way for owner John Grant
of Hornby 'and driver Bill Wellwood. He's
won each of his nine starts to date, in-
cluding five Ontario Sires Stakes events.
In his most recent start, he won by 17 12
lengths in a time of 2:01 at Flamboro
Downs' half -mile track. That clocking was
an all-time Canadian record and there are
many who believe Armbro Fame is as
good as any of the U.S. colts.
On the pacing side of the ledger, three-
year-old colt Daylon Blue has been having
success against his American counter-
parts. Earlier this year he won the Burl-
ington_ Stakes at Greenwood Raceway for
trainer -driver Doug McIntosh. Then on
August 17 the son of Armbro Omaha raced
in the Confederation Cup at Flamboro
Downs. He finished fourth in his heat to
qualify for the final and in the final picked
up a cheque while racing against the
brilliant Nobleland Sm, who set an all-time
Canadian record of 1:55.1 over, the half -
mile oval. Owned_by J. Louis Levesque,
Daylon Blue is undefeated in three Onatr)o
Sires Stakes events this year and has
earned more than $154,000 to date.
At Ottawa's Rideau Carleton Raceway
on August 10 Kawartha Playtime won the
$200,000 Governor General's Cup for Kin-
cardine, native, Dave Wall. The son of
Kawartha Skipper set a track record of
1:55.2 to down two other OSS standouts,
Known Fact and Sues Jake. Owned by
Nick Barbieri of Woodbridge, Kawartha
Playtime picked up more than $38,000 for
his efforts in that prestigious race.
