Couples brave elements
in Maitland Invitational
I was asked why my column didn't ap-
pear in last week's paper, and -the answer
was that I had been away on. holidays. It is
gratifying to know that it was missed, by
one person anyway Now, catch-up time.
On August 11, 48 men participated in
men'S night (with perfect golf weather).
Ralph Neville shot first low net with Issy
Bedard scoring first low gross. (Next
lowest on the cards were Ross McDaniel,
Mike hajeunesse, Jack Hinton, Don
Mason, Harold" Refflinghaus, Murray
McGill, Carl Lawson, Al MacDonald and
Bob Durnin.)
The men's section is losing another ac-
tive member. Guy Kelly has been transfer-
red so he got a special "handicap" and
won a dozen golf balls. So long, Guy - you
'will be missed.
Twenty-seven participated on Ladies'
night, August 12th, with Verna Kane tak-
ing, top honors, followed. by Joan
McDougall, Mary Lapaine, Jean Hanly,
Phil Lawrence and Bud Elliott. (Best put-
ters were Ardith Brissette, Kay Duncan
and Pat Tyndall). •
Club Couples Two -Ball moves right
along with 42 people ouf on Thursday. Top
spot was taken by Claire Patterson and
Clive Caswell, second Al MacDonald and
Joan McDougall, third, Gail Caswell and
Ron Patterson and finally Joyce Garrick
and Jack Hoffmeyer. Nice to see some new
golfers rbames on that list of winners.
It seems that the majority of people can.
play well in very hot weather as on Mon-
day Aug, 18, 56 men played and the scores
turned in were very low. Mike Lajeunesse
scored a 29 net withPat Murphy carding a
36 gross. Other winners were Bill Graham,
Bob Cousins, Al MacDonald, Gerry
Morgan; John Stringer, Neil Shaw, Jack
° Gould; Clive Caswell and Vince Young:

The ladies had another Fun Night on
Tuesday, participating in a Texas Scram-
ble. There was a good turnout and all en-
joyed themselves. The first team consisted
of Jean Bell, Joyce Shack and ,Julia Sully.
Second team - Joan McDougall, Mary La-
paine, Kay King and Jean Hanly. Third
team - Bess Smith, Audrey Rumble and
Chris Hoffmeyer.
Following the golf we rounded out the
evening with a corn roast at the home of
Mary. Lapaine. Thanks Mary ,for your
hospitality, and thanks to Chris for the
yummy corn.
The first Annual Member -Guest tourna-
ment on Wednesday afternoon was blessed
with perfect weather. Twenty-six teams
played, and at least five ladies played in
this best ball. There was a tie for first
place and Don Mason and Andy Vilet won
over Tony Bedard and Al MacDonald.
If the Guest tournament had good
weather, the annual Couples Invitational
definitely did not, being held on Sat.,
August 23rd with wet (soaking?) and win-
dy weather. However 26 couples braved
the elements and the winners were
MacEwan ("Q") Egerier and Carol -Ann
Doig with Bob and Joan McDougall taking
first low net. Other Goderich winners were
Bill and Jean Hanly, Fred and Edna
Looker, Bruno and Mary Lapaine, and Ed
and Ardith Brissette. Stan and Doris Pa-
quette we back for the day and Doris
presented her trophy to Joan McDougall
for the best ladies low net score.
