Martha says fall season
comes one week early
It seems our fall has announced itself - a
week or more early. I wonder why? I'm get-
ting mighty suspicious since the birds are
lining up on the telephone wires - the robins
are already missing, the tiny tweetie, birds
have flown.- south?
When the Ex in Toronto starts you know
for►sure we will have a few unsettled days, a
few nice ones, then look out —anything can
happen.
So, start deciding which plans you want to
have indoors, look for those tall galoshes
and haul out some of the winter clothes.
Most of it won't fit, won't look like anything
you want to wear - but it makes you think,
• ,helps you make up your mind about what
You want to wear - and get you in the "mood
for the rotten weather.
I know it is out there somewhere. Just
thought I'd mention it in case you hadn't
noticed.
or The storekeepers are a lot sharper than
we are - their big sales are about finished - in
a day or so you will see the new "Winter
Line" and you'll faint when you see the
prices.
I can't resist this oldie: "The boneless
tongue so .small and weak can crush and
kill" declared the Greek. The tongue
destroys a greater hoard "The Turk
asserts", than does the sword. A Persian
proverb wisely sayeth, "A lengthy Tongue -
an early death," or sometimes' takes this
form instead - "Don't let your tongue cut off
your head."
"The tongue can speak a word whose
speed", the Chinese say, "outstrips the
steed", while Arab sages this impart - "The
tongue's great storehouse is the heart".
From Hebrew wit this maxim sprung -
"Though feet should slip, ne'er. let . the
tongue". The sacred writer crowns the
whole - "Who keeps his tongue doth keep his
soul". The author is unknown but we thank
flim.
I find I am not the only one going at full
speed. I had a dozen things I wanted to do on
Sunday, but as I have said before, I get tired
of tippee-toeing.around. the•house,so decid-•
ed to go see the Flea Market.
First off I had coffee and toast down town,
then since I was so close I had to check the
harbor. A big ship was in for salt so all
seemed fine.
I couldn't go back up i the hill before I
checked on the new beach. Well! Things
have certainly been moving down there, I
was really surprised. Looking farther on at
the fallen banks - made me a little uneasy - I
just can't vision a repair job on them! So, I
' started back.
The fruits and veggies at the old Gaol
looked great. People were out in full force
drooting over them. I found a nice old book -
not that I need more books, talked to all the
rich
/cuu£y
nice people there - and when I say nice that's
what I mean.
This is one market where "you meet the
nicest people." There is no "flea market"
atmosphere - no one "haggles" - 'cept in a
low voice. Everything shines in the sun - not
even any grubby old things, you see in other
places, are sitting around. I mean
merchandise!
On Monday morning, , I was still rush
rushing, expecting company, too. A grand-
son, wife and growing family - how fast they
,grow up.
One nice thing about my family is that.
they all love' Goderich. They're all real busy
and don't- get here as often as they would
like.
There's one thing they miss. When they, were small we had Pipers Dam on the
Maitland to take wee folk. The water was
shallow and warm and they had a wonderful
time learning to swim. Now they feel badly
they can't take their kids to that wonderful
place. I feel badly about it, too, when I hear
them telling about that "magic" place - why
you could even stop out of warm water into
icy cold water - that was fun too.
A great many of you remember it - if you
are over 25 or thereabouts.
' ` We all have our special memories. Hope
yours are happy ones, too.
Love,
Martha
