The Goderich Signal-Star, 1986-08-27, Page 7Reli •ion Be like Babe Ruth and don't be afraid to strike out BY REV. C. GEDDES, BLUEW ATER CENTRE Who was the greatest major league baseball. hitter of all time? Babe Ruth, naturally ! Nobody denies that. And who holds the greatest lifetime record of striking out? The same Babe Ruth! The mighty Ruth hit a total of 714 major- league home runs. In 1927 his record was 60 for a season — a mark every heavy hitter has been aiming at since. But did you know that his total number of strikeouts was a whopping 1,330? In other words, he struck out almost twice as many times as he knocked home runs! Babe Ruth wasn't afraid to strike out. He wasn't afraid to try. Whenlieconnected he went places. What connection was there bet- ween his record strikeouts and his record home runs? Just this - he wasn't afraid to strike out. He gave each swing all he had. And, by the law of averages, he connected with enough pitches to more than make up for his misses. In Matthew 25: 14-30, Jesus talked about three servants who had been entrusted with money by their master. The first two in- vested the money and doubled its value and the master duly rewarded them. The third servant, however, was timid and feared losing the money entrusted to him. So he buried it in the ground and returned it to the master upon his return. He MCMILLAN-GILBERT Connie Ellen McMillan and Michel Brian Gilbert, both of Goderich, were married on June 21 at the home of the bride's parents, Ken and Phyllis McMillan. Rev. J. Wood of- ficiated. The groom's parepts Ernest - and Ire ne Gilbert r t of Lo ndo n. Maid d of honor or was Sandra Riley and bridesmaids were Greg Debbie Abbott and Heather Stewart. If there is any sin most of us are guilty of, it is the sin of 'hot trying - of giving our se- cond best - of failing to aim high in our lives. Already in your life you have conquered fears and challenges that once look unbeatable. Remember when you started to school howdifficult reading and writing looked tete? Now you do both easily. But you still fa"ee obstacles. Whether you over- come them-kr not depends less upon your native ability -than upon your willingness to try. The sin of omission is the sin of "not try- ing". The sin of not doing is the sin of not try- ing, the sin of doing our second or third best. This plagues us more than many of our other faults. Few of us dare to be truly bad. We land in jail if we are. But no police of- ficer will knock on our door if we do nothing. Usually nobody even knows but us. Jesus taught that God, wants us to be our best - physically, mentally, socially and spiritually. He wants our bodies to be well developed and healthy. He wants our minds kept clear and sharp for hard thinking. He wants us to mix easily and freely with other people. He wants us to love and to worship or him. To live so fully as this requires daring. We mustbewilling the striking - of havingpeople laugh at our failures as well as admire our successes. Strangely enough, our failures often teach us more than our successes ever do. When we strike out, therefore, we are apt to learn a valuable lesson. Don't be afraid to strike out! Now and then you will hit a homerun. Babe Ruth did. You can do it, too.,.
