Impressive because the long-running Broadway musical is an ambitious project facing several formidable barriers. It in- volves a cast which approaches 50 and con, tains a wealth of song and dance numbers, requiring precise choreography. As well, a recent movie based on the musical provides a measuring stick for those that wish to assess a production of "Annie" critically. Compelling because despite these poten- tial harriers, "Annie" comes through with flying colors, drawing the audience into the story of the little red-haired orphan, making her struggles, theirs. The opening number, when the 30 girls from the orphanage bewail that "It's a Hard Enough Life For Us," is handled with vigour and zest. It sets the stage for the rest of the musical numbers which are performed with comparable enthusiasm and life. Theresa Stewart, a 15 year old, who por- trays Annie, was the top Canadian con- tender for the leading role in the film ver- sion of the musical and it quickly becomes apparent why.• She .brings to Annie just the right blend of wide-eyed innocence. and worldly wisdom which befits a child who has spent the first 11 years of her life in a "hard knock" orphanage. Her singing, especially of the timeless "Tommorrow," is stirring and inspiring. Stewart's Annie is so good that it's not surprising to find that she's played the part before –last year in fact at the Sudbury Theatre Centre. Another bright spot becomes evident in the early going in Barbara Wheeldon's por- trayal of Miss Hannigan. Wheeldon brings life and sympathy to an otherwise stock character, the wicked, boozing stepmother figure who works the girls till their., hands are raw. As expected, she garnered the most laughs from the preview night crowd, but her voice earned her respect as well. Her low sultry growl, most evident in the boisterous, "Easy Street" is a pleasure to, the ears. She is less effective when she tackles the upper register however. After the opening scene in the orphanage, Annie escapes from its confines, first by stealth, to search for her parents, then legitimately under the wing of Grace Far– rell personal secretary to Oliver Warbucks. Warbucks, played by Charles Kerr, an ex- perienced actor .making his first ap- pearance at the Playhouse, is a billionaire determined to entertain an orphan for Christmas. Annie, having just been return- ed to the orphanage after her escape and subsequent search for her parents; is the ob-. vious choice. From there Annie goes on to charm, War - bucks, his servants, Franklin D. Roosevelt, • his cabinet and the entire country. A search for her parents ensues, providing Miss Han- nigan and her ne'er-do-well brother, annual car rally Teams can register at, and depart from, the Blyth Memorial Hall on the day of the. rally, at any time between 9 a.m. and 12. noon. "Annie" continues its run at the Huron Country Playhouse's Main Stage until September 6. scheme to claim the reward money. The pace is quick and the performances competent. James Hobson as F.D.R. is priceless. Kerr creates a suitably gruff but loveable Warbucks, though he had a tenden- cy to stumble over a few words when speak- ing quickly. Skidmore (Grace Farrell) plays the part well but leaves no lasting im- pression. Alan Brown's Rooster is just char- ming and sly enough to qualify as a memorable villain. When he teams up with Wheeldon and his girlfriend to sing "Easy Street," the rafters ring. Wiggins missed a cue but was otherwise great as Annie's dog, Sandy.. Technically, the play was excellent as well. The choreography by Malcom Gale was exact yet flowing and visually im- pressive. The sets; handled by Brian Per - chaluk, were functional and conveyed a sense of the era without being too elaborate. George Pruden's costumes were what one would expect for "Annie," but I would have liked the orphans to appear a bit more rag- tag in dress. Lighting is at it's best when it is least distracting and that I hardly noticed Grant Smith's and Crystal Salverda's han- diwork is testament to their skill. The most important aspect of the play to me is the score. The music, performed exceptionally by the seven piece orchestra, conducted by Michael Mulrooney has had me whistling the melodies ever since. "Annie," . running from August 12 to September 6 at the Main Stage, comes through on the strength of the enthusiasm and verve of its players. Any comparison to the movie version of the show would certain- ly be favorable. artha praises Goderich in a letter to her granddaughter A letter to my granddaughter in Florida - Dear Linda and all. I was surprised so many strangers week. Looked good. After all "Muggs" has told me how they have enjoyed my escapades for so many years in the Signal Star and they remember the places and en- joy the situations. I wanted you to know I enjoyed the , children calling me "Gramma Jo". It took be back to when you were so tiny and you called the tiny- chicks we, had "Joe" since Jean and Fred Price's canary' was called Joe and you were there so often with them - your Aunt and Uncle. My dad and mum Bartlett were with us at that time. Walter had bought the chicks to give Dad "something to do." The chicks grew up and many people recall the chicken suppers on our "Farm" we all enjoyed. This summer has almost been a repeat of 1967 with so many parades and celebrations. Seems Goderich was settled 'up top' about 1827 and many little villages were created - not long afterwards, around it. So these towns are having fun celebrating. Must run — love you all. Gramma Jo. The "love you all" bit goes for you too. Love, Martha. gone through in the last year, we were hap- pily surprised. They had picked "pie" cherries and made six pies - but they forgot to put in the sugar! She loved our new beach and what had happened to the old one - and wasn't it nice to join them with that big`wooden sidewalk! She was thrilled by all the new buildings around the town and still just loved the old ones." Hubby Mark was also impressed with the Port of Goderich. Bill and Ginny - (of Goderich "Chamney" family) were here last week, came to Mall, loved my paintings and bought one, too.
