Health Unit plans programs
to help people quit smoking
Efforts by the Huron County Health Unit
to arrange a program to help people kick the
habit will be good news to smokers who
want to beat their addictions.
The program is organized by Sheryl
Gilbert of the Huron County Health Unit and
starts Wednesday, September 3 at the Court
House, Goderich. It consists of four even-
ings with " a follow-up meeting in late
October.
The program has been based on two
others developed by other health organiza-
tions. The Goderich program will be the,
fifth one held in the area.
The program is designed to help people
who have decided to quit smoking be suc-
cessful at "butting out"! Films, self-
awareness worksheets, guest speakers and
peer support make for an interesting pro-
gram. However, the Health Unit employee
noted that, "if the motivation to quit doesn't
come from within them (participants), the
program won't make them quit. It's like
fitness, somebody can tell you to get fit but if
you're not motivated..."
Evaluations completed by participants in
the other programs "were pretty positive"
she noted.
For more information about the Health
Unit's Quit Smoking Program or to
preregister, call Sheryl at 524-8301.. even if
it's just for the health of it! Preregistrations
must be completed by Friday, August 29th!
