HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1986-08-13, Page 24S orts Cyciing skills important in the city by Frances Sgro Bruce T. ermans has a bicycle for all seasons a reasons. There's fat -tired winter five -speed for treading t rough snow. There's his slim- mer, light eight machine for inner-city commutin . And then there are his Euro- pean stage racing bicycle and his two tour- ing machi es, one of them a well -used but mechanica ly fit bike that's covered over 28,989 kilometres. No doubt, the 42 -year-old Ottawa resi- dent and executive director of the Ottawa Bicycling Club is a serious cyclist. But even after glescribing his treasured collec- tion, ollecttion, Timmerman$ will tell you that it's not the number of bicycles that's important. He's seen enough accidents in his 35 years of cycling to know that the only serious cyclist is a safe one. Cycling safety among adult riders has become a concern. The problem, says Timmerman, is that more and more en- thusiasts are' buying bicycles - one million are sold each year in Canada -- and and driving them in traffic with minimal cycling skills and little knowledge of on - road behaviour. The result is accidents. In fact, accor- ding to Timmermans, statistics show that an inexperienced cyclist is 10 times more likely to get into an accident than a trained cyclist. Lumley nets three as Peewees .dump St. Columban A week ago last Friday, the peewees hosted St. Columban and won by a 4-1 count. Highscoring striker Bob Lumley, a lethal finisher given even half an oppor- tunity, netted three goals. Bryan Cor- riveau added one. Coach L da Lumley felt that her team put on a w 11 -balanced display. Defensive standout were centre -back Keith Ducharme left -back Mike Stegenstad, and right -back Gregg De Winter. Left wing Kelly L mley, midfielder Aaron Duckworth and inside -left Shane Daven- port showe 1 creativity in their passing and support pi- y. Bryan Cgrriveau and Shane Davenport split the goaltending chores and both were sound under pressure. The Peewees travelled to Kincardine the following day to participate in the Huron Minor Soccer Association Peewee Playoff Championship. In the first game they lost to Kincardine 2-0. They were defeated 3-1 - n in the second game. Bob 1 ba bySt. Co usm Lumley scored the Goderich goal. Last Tuesday night the Mosquitos tied with Seaforth 3-3 in a game played in Goderich. Striker Donny Rivers scored two goals and left-wing Mike Hunter one. Coach Jeff little felt that his team let down a litt e in the final fifteen minutes when Seaforth scored twice. The Atoms were defeated 10-3 in Seaforth last Thursday. Jeff Klages, Jason Meriam and Steven Linklater scored one goal apiece. Coach Mike Cicchinj felt that his team played well. in the first half, which ended with the scored deadlocked at,2-2. in Squirt House League action last Wednesday, Coach Murray Hunter's Giants clinched the championship by beating Bombers 5-2. Terry Pardys and Matt Hunter scored two goals each and Mark Hunter added one for Giants. Leander Campbell scored both goals for Bombers. - •4ii.$iii::": }i:j:5 i:L:;: v::i}$:?•i: •::......:.............. r}RG::'r$i:<;;: Rider skill critical Accident figures from Ottawa underscore the lack of skill among that city's cycling population. In 1983, there were 504 reported accidents that required medical attention, including four deaths. About half of these riders just fell from their bikes. They' fell because they didn't know how to contro heir bikes," says Timmerman. "They m have hit a pot -hole -and-not- been able t cope. Or maybe they weren't able to hand the railroad tracks." Bicycles r ning into other bicycles was the second most frequent accident type (about 20 per cent) and bicycle / motor vehicle mishaps (about 17 per cent) the this`d. Ottawa's statistics, says_ Timmer - mans, mirror findings in other Canadian - cities as well as studies done in the United .States. Clearly, the skill of the rider is the most important safety factor in preventing accidents. Part of the problem is that novice adult cyclists don't have access to cycling train- ing programs suited to their needs: they learn through trial and error which, as the figures indicate, isn't always the best teacher. Many cycling associations and clubs across Canada, however, are now trying to fill this void for the adult cyclist. Know your bicycle Fundamental to adult training programs is knowledge of bicycle handling skills. Ideally, these skills should be acquired before the cyclists sets a wheel in heavy traffic. Denys Beamer, a bicycle resear- ,. cher with the City of Toronto, lists the necessary skills: -getting on and off a bicycle; -getting underway safely with little wobbling and swerving; -driving in a straight line; -turning safely - both gradually and quickly; -stopping safely and accurately; keeping your balance and a straight line of travel while signall- ing, driving slowly and looking back over your shoulder;' and -on multi -speed bicycles, making proper use of the gears and shifting them while maintaining con- trol of the bicycle. , , GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 13, 1986 -PAGE 7A GODERICH I IIINOFF HOCKEY R Monday, August 18th. from 7 p.. . to 9 p.m • and' sda ,---A g-us+49T - at the Recreation Office Community Room in the Grandstand.
