necessarily in that order). A long lay-off
from any sport can be devastating and ten-
nis is no exception. For McEnroe to do so
well is indicative of his prowess on the
court and his desire to win.
It's a victory for tennis as well.
I'm not saying that tennis hasn't been
exciting while McEnroe's been gone. It
has. Players like Becker, Lendl, Wilander
and others•have provided plenty of excite-
ment on the court.
But the game has been -well, it's been a
little sterile.
Wilander is.the perfect gentleman on the
court. Becker is the bright and cheery, up-
and-coming kid that everybody loves.
Lendl almost qualifies as an on -court bad -
die but falls short in that most of his
temper tantrums amount to little more
than nasty looks and a bit of glowering.
'Mac' is the only acceptable candidate
for the title of "Guy That Everyone Loves
To Hate." His antics are entertaining in a
strange sort of way. When he disputes
calls, swears at line judges, hits balls at
photographers and makes wise -cracks to
the crowd, we love it. His displays, add a
little color to a game that is sometimes a
little bland because players are so stoic in

New fishing
licence for 1987
SPORTS SHORTS
Ontario will introduce a resident licence
for sport fishing in 1987, Ontario Natural
Resources Minister Vincent Kerrio has
announced.
Mr. Kerrio said the licence will be re--.
quired of most Ontario residents aged 18 to
64. Senior citizens and the disabled will be
exempt, as will Status Indians fishing on
their reserves or treaty areas. The annual
licence will cost $10 while a short-term
licence to fish for fout consecutive days
will cost $5.
"In public meetings held across the pro-
vince, and through angler surveys, we
have received strong support for this
licence," said Mr. Kerrio.
The licence will be widely available
through the Ministry of Natural
Resources' (MNR)' network of private
licence issuers,which includes sporting
goods stores and tackle and bait shops.
The network will be expanded as required
to meet the demand for the licence. MNR
district offices will also distribute the
licences.
In January, Cabinet ,gave approval in
principle to the proposed licence. Since
then, the Ministry of Natural Resources
has held more than 30 meetings across the
province to hear public views.
Denise Mitchelmore was chosen the Most
Valuable Pitcher of the entire tournament
with an earned run average of .06. Goderich
Elevators Ladies' Fastball team won the
tourney in Port Elgin on the long weekend.
They beat Guelph 84 in the final game.
