Purchase f EMA grocery store in
Goderich fulfills dre:.T1 far John Shaw
BY PAUL IIARTMAN
When John Shaw purchased a local
grocery store in early June it signalled the
fulfillment of a life-long dream.
"I've always wanted to have my own
store," explains the new owner of the EMA
(Elliot Mar and Associates) grocery store
on Victoria Street, "so when the opportunity
came upz I grabbed it." EMA is a London
based company that has 26 franchises in
Southwestern Ontario.
Shaw, born and raised in Mount Forest,
began working at a grocery store in that
town 25 years ago. Moving to Kitchener, he
worked as a grocery clerk and overAeight
years worked his way up to manager.
He then "took his show on the road" so to
speak, accepting a job as district super-
visor, covering the Kincardine-Goderich-
Exeter area. He followed this position with a
stint as districrmanager in Wingham, a job
that lasted for nine years and included the
responsibility of opening new stores. During
his stay in Wingham, John opened the Zehrs
store in Goderich and trained the staff
there.
A final transfer took him to the Zehrs head
office in Cambridge where, as personnel
'manager, he was responsible for 3,500
employees.
"I really misSed working with the public,"
John explains of his time in the upper
echelons of the Zehrs organization.
An opportunity to work with the public,
along with a desire to own a store, prompted
John to purchase the.building formerly own-
ed by Max
Cut
t.
"Max comes in and gives me morning pep
talks about the business," he laughs. "I still
have a bit to learn about running my own
store."

"We're going to focus on fresh produce,”
he explains, adding that the bulk of the pro-
duce for the store is purchased in the im-
mediate area. "We hope to get a delivery
system started as well."
But perhaps the most significant aspect of
the business to John Shaw
is public rela
tions. "I'm looking forward to eeting the
new customers —they're the most important
thing to me."
