Ann Opal, a two-year-old filly, will be the horse to beat when the Ontario Sires Stakes come to the Goderich Raceway this Thursday evening. Post time is 7:30. Ann Opal still the filly to beat as Sires ,taies come to Goderich Racewa When the Ontario Sires Stakes season began in early June, it looked as if Ann Opal would be the best two-year-old pacing filly around. While she still ranks at the top of her class at this writing, there are several fillies who are going to give her a run for the money, and many of them will be at Goderich Raceway when these young lasses come to the half -mile oval for a Thursday, August 7 Ontario Sires Stakes battle. Owned and bred by Fred Simpson of Dutton and trained by his 70 -year-old brother Kelso, . Ann Opal has won more than $75,000 already this year in just seven starts, winning five of those races. Her 'fastest win to date was a North American season's record performance of 1:59.1 at Windsor Raceway on June 8. Since that time, Ann Opal has posted victories at Dresden, Leamington, and Elmira raceways. Ann Opal's stiffest competition this year has come from the beautiful chestnut - colored filly Hornby Judy. This daughter of League Leader, himself a winner of more than $700,000 during his racing career, has won five of eight starts this year for earnings of $57,561. She's trained and driven by Bill" Wellwood for Hornby owner John Grant. Grant owned League Leader when he raced and also owned Hornby Judy's mother. Trainer Jean Poulin of Strathroy, Ont., has a strong contender this year in Kawar- tha Lynn. She won a schooling race at Mohawk Raceway in early spring in 2:00.2 and to date shows winning of more than $22,000. If, they gave a prize for coming the longest distance for this OSS event at Goderich, the veinier would probably be Rowdy Lady. The filly is based at Sudbury Downs, but she has already made the long trip to Belleville Raceway for previous OSS race and paced away with an open lengths victory for owners Daryl Munro and Fernand Brisebois of Sudbury. Some of the locally owned fillies which Inay answer the starter's call at Goderich include: Armbro Fleecy, a daughter of Armbro Ranger owned by . Joe Lane of Seaforth and Larjon Stables of Wingham. She's trained by George 'Butch' Elliott, who is based at Clinton Raceway, and has been driven by Goderich regular, Ross Battin; Brogues Babe, owned by Leslie Campbell of Seaforth, has won more than $4,300 this year and finished second to Ann Opal in an earlier OSS event at Leam- ington Raceway; J Ds Dixie, is owned by Edward and John Watson of Blyth and has already raced at Goderich this year. Fred ' Sadler handles the training on this "youngster, who is a daughter of Seelster Farms' Armbro Splurge. B Line Rockette," another local filly, is trained by Joan Ellerker for Ripley owner Larry Dresser. This filly has finished se- cond and third in two Ontario Sires Stakes starts. She's sired by a horse fondly remembered by many Goderich fans, Rock N Wave, who was developed and rac- ed by Kincardine native, Dave Wall, one of Canada's leading horsemen; The William 'Bud' Fritz stable is always a strong one in the Ontario Sires Stakes. Among his string of youngsters this year is Ecomic Dream, a daughter of Dream Maker who is owned by the Walkerton horseman along with Hugh Pearson of Brussels, Ont. Post time at Goderich Raceway on Thursday night, August 7 is set for 7:30 p.m. Cochrane wins low net as numbers dwindl With us getting into holiday season, the numbers out' for both men's and ladies' nights were considerably lower than the past few weeks. However, 50 men turned out on Monday July 28th. The scores were very low considering the fast greens. $ill Cochrane came through with first low net of 28 with John Hanly first low gross of 34. Bob Durnin made his shot on No. 1 closest to the hole, while Don MacEwan did the same trick on No. 5. Other winners were Vic Finnie, Neil Shaw, Earl Rawson, Fred Looker, Bob Boak, Jack Hoffmeyer, Ralph Neville, Pat Murphy, Bob Durnin, Doug Bundy, Gerald Morgan and Bili Brown. Couples. night again had a good turn out and the top four were Jean Hanly and Tony Bedard, Kay King and Allan MacDonald, Mary Lapaine and Don Stewart and Ardith Brissette and Bill Hanly. I was a little premature in saying good- bye to the Trebish's last week. However, this past Monday the men presented Jack Trebish with an automatic 40 handicap and a dozen golf balls, while the ladies ON THE BALL at the Maitland Q.B.
