The Goderich Signal-Star, 1986-08-06, Page 5The innocent are risk if imum security wing added.. • from page 4 now at the centre. This meas that we have to worry .next about possible escapes of rapists, arsonists and murderers, all pro- tected under the Young Offenders Act. When asked if this wing would have more staff or stricter guarding systems, the only answer was that it would be guarded in the same way, but these residents would be in cells. The land around the Centre is to be farm- ed by the residents next year. With the great emphasis on not wanting to spend provincial tax dollars on a second fence, I wonder if Mr. DeGrandis meant that this farmed land will not be fenced in. As a member,of this farm community and knowing the costs of farm machinery and LI- liTRS low profits for crops, this appears to me to be a waste of provincial tax dollars and a chance for the centre's residents Io escape and look like all the neighbours in the community. I wonder how many people have spotted the centre's residents on the streets of Goderich. How can we tell if they have legal passes from the centre? There are at least two witnesses from our neighbourhood who saw one of these three offenders escape at the court house yester- day. He has been caught, I understand, but I feel that he at least shows little sign of becoming a better citizen by getting the lux- uries of a residence with fancy cafeterias and swimming pool. How many high schools offer that in this county? As long as mistakes are being made and the innocent are at risk, I feel that we should fight to stop the completion of this max- imum security wing. I feel that if the centre does exist, it should be guarded to the maximum. Maybe we need police officers doing the actual guar- ding of the grounds. We must unite with our concerns and write our own gut feelings to our M.P.s and M.P.P.s. Let's unite for positive action. A sleepless mother of three, Jane McClinchey. Truck traffic through residential area in town should have a curfew Dear Editor:. I was pleased to note from the article ap- pearing on the front. page of your July 16th --- illi -Sit that Police Chief King is concerned about night time noise at St. Christopher's Beach which no doubt disturbs citizens residing on Essex Street. Residents on Elgin Avenue West and Well- ington Street also ha% serious problem with night time noise ed by heavy truck traffic to and frotn the har- bour/elevator area. Residents netitioned -r Town officials to impose a curfew on the truck route to the elevators, but nothing has been done to date to address the situation. We appreciate that during harvest periods, it may be necessary for truckers to use the route late in the day, but why at other times are they permitted to travel to and •from the elevators late at night and in the early hours of the morning? Surely it is not unreasonable to expect our elected of- ficials to take appropriate action to protect the health and ,,,M1 -being of all citizens. In my view, a,curfew on truck traffic on the truck route through this residential area between the hours of 11:30 p.m. and 6 a.m. would be a reasonable solution to the pro- blem until such time as an alternate proper truck route is constructed. Yours very truly, James E. Abell, 130 Elgin Avenue West, Goderich, Ontario N7A 2E5. It Thanks Goderich for financial support Dear editor: As parents of murdered children, we were appalled when Cliffored Olson was allowed to profit from the deaths of our children. We were further horrified when a British Col- umbia Appeal Court returned the money to him after we had successfully fought a long battle to have the money taken from him. The fight to recover the money from•Olson has been costly and we sincerely appreciate the support we have received from many across Canada.
