The Port Albert fishway has definitely
made life easier for rainbow trout moving
up the Nine Mile River to spawn. Spring
run totals increased from 335 to 856 during
six years the Ministry of Natural
Resources handled fish after the fishway
opened in 1978. ,
The trout run, small in' comparison to
other rivers emptying into Lake Huron,
was the first to be helped up stream by a
fishway. The small numbers of trout try-
ing to get up Nine Mile River to spawn was
not surprising since the fish normally
return to the same river where they were
born and spawning in Nine Mile River had
been unsuccessful in the past. Many of the
trout trapped in the fishway during the
first spring run after the fishway was built,
were mature fish adding support to the
theory that the Port Albert area .had been
unproductive in the past.
There were two main reasons for the
poor spawnings. It was almost impossible
for the trout to get past the Port Albert
dam to spawn. A hole in the dam was the
only route the fish could take to get
upstream and conditions had to be ideal
for the trout to get through it.
