a harbour. The Harbour Reserve contains
seven and three-quarters acres which was
set aside in 1848 by John Hawkins.
John Hawkins (1803-1863) and his wife
Elizabeth Robotham came to Canada im-
mediately after their marriage in 1823. He
opened •the English schqol in Upper
Canada (London, Ont.) in Aug. 1831. He
was also a barracks master from 1838 to
1840 after which he asked for his discharge
and moved up to the townsite of Albert.
John's brother William (1807-1890) who
surveyed the Twps. of Ashfield and West
Wawanosh and the townsite of Port
Albert, no doubt influenced his brother to
come here.
In 1841, John Hawkins became govern-
ment land agent for Ashfield. His name
was mentioned in the first -town meeting,
January 1842 at Sharpe's Hotel. Later he
served several times as Reeve of Ashfield.
Because he dominated early politics, he is
considered the founder of Port Albert. -
