The date of the picture is August 18, 1909. The Royal Hotel is on the right and the blacksmith shop is next with Sharpe's Hotel in the background. Land agent John .Hawkins became reeve of Ashfield from page 10 a harbour. The Harbour Reserve contains seven and three-quarters acres which was set aside in 1848 by John Hawkins. John Hawkins (1803-1863) and his wife Elizabeth Robotham came to Canada im- mediately after their marriage in 1823. He opened •the English schqol in Upper Canada (London, Ont.) in Aug. 1831. He was also a barracks master from 1838 to 1840 after which he asked for his discharge and moved up to the townsite of Albert. John's brother William (1807-1890) who surveyed the Twps. of Ashfield and West Wawanosh and the townsite of Port Albert, no doubt influenced his brother to come here. In 1841, John Hawkins became govern- ment land agent for Ashfield. His name was mentioned in the first -town meeting, January 1842 at Sharpe's Hotel. Later he served several times as Reeve of Ashfield. Because he dominated early politics, he is considered the founder of Port Albert. - Happy 150th Port Albert!
