a year long celebration
The Port,Albert Sesquicentennial is not
only a big homecoming reunion weekend
in August. It has been a year long celebra-
tion with several events to mark the occa-
sion throughout the year.
A 50s and 60s dance, a fish derby, a car
rally, a barn dance and a ball tournament
have all met enthusiastic response as Port
Albert natives, residents and friends got
into the spirit of things,
The finest day of the winter season
greeted participants in the cross country
skidaddle held February 8. A total of 15
adult prizes were awarded as well as 15
children's prizes. Horse drawn sleigh rides
and a hot • chili supper prepared by Pat
Williams and Darlene Bauer brought a
great winter's day to an end.
The first event was a contest to choose a
logo for the celebration and elementary
school students were invited to design a
logo to represent Port Albert Kicks in '86.
Laurieflayden's design of a lad kicking his
heels with the years 1886 and 1986 in each
hand was the winner. This logo has ap-
peared on all advertising and brochures
and • on the cover of the special ses-
quicentennial edition published by Signal -
Star Publishing. -
The 50s and 60s dance.organized by Kim
Dickson was held at the Dungannon
Agricultural Hall March 8 and everyone
turned out in their bobby socks and
ducktails or bell bottoms and Beatle hair-
cuts for some great rockin' and rollin'.
The fish derby April 26 saw enthusiastic
anglers wet their lines in an effort to catch
a prize winning fish. Prizes for the longest
fish went to Mark Brown of Goderich
whose catch measured 29 3 inches,
Dominic Persichetti of London whose
catch measured 29 1 inches and Dean In-
gham of Ingersol whose entry measured 29
1 inches.
Fourteen prizes in all were up for grabs
and two went to local residents Don Bauer
and Roy Gutmanis. Ron Dennis Jr. won a
fishing pole in/the under age 16 category.
The derby was organized by Steve
Williams.
• The CKNX Barn Dance at W. G. Thomp-
son's on June 21 was a knee slappin' affair
that saw the building filled to the rafters.
Canadian Fiddle Champions Eleanor
and Graham Townsend highlighted the
musical entertainment. Eleanor is a
native of Asigield Township being the
former Eleanor Reed.
Other barn dance entertainers included
Ernie King and Earl and Martha Heywood
from the original CKNX Barn Dance,
Mary Elliott Freeman, Phil Main, Main
Street West, Richard Knechtel, the
McMichael Sisters and the Roadshow
Houseband. CKNX announcer Jerry
Chomyn was master of ceremonies.
The sesquicentennial queen was.chosen
from 10 contestants in a pageant which
was held in conjunction with the barn
dance. Jane Haskell was named Miss Port
Albert and Mary Lynn Doherty and Laurie
Hayden were runnersup.
You needed a keen eye to spot the clues
in the car rally held June 15. Forty cars
participated in the rally organized -by Don
and Jan Dickson. Jim and Donna Hayden
and their daughters, Laurie and Linda
took the win with a total of 52 points.
Second place went to Rob Corkum, John
Lalonde and Steve Hickey with 49 points.
Tied for third place with 47 points were
Duane Rivett and Terry Sowerby and Judy
and John Hickey. Bill Crawford and Ron
Hodges won the prize for the most original
proof of purchase.
Local residents also took an interest in
dressing up the village for the ses-
quicentennial activities. The flower boxes
in various locations and shrubs under the
Port Albert entrance signs have given the
village a facelift thanks to the efforts of
Patti Maize.
Eugene McGee unofficial Port Albert
sign maker is responsible for the making
'and placement of the Nine Mile River sign
in the hollow and the street signs around
the hamlet. \
