Recent experience has taught me that
photographing sporting events can be far
less frustrating than actually playing
them.
Watching people perform well in sports
and taking pictures of them in the process
of doing so is inspiring. It also provides an
opportunity for me to "go to school" so to
speak, on their execution and hopefully
pick up some tips. le mess
On the other hand, watching people
at their specific sport .provides me with
a twisted, sick form of satisfaction knovi-
ing that I'm not alone in my mediocrity.
Either way you look at it then, it's a good
deal, this sports photography business.
A great example comesfrom the most
maddening of all the games that people
play —golf.
Covering the Sunset Couple's Invita-
tional Tournament on the weekend, I wat-
ched one woman sink a chip from about 20
yards out and was a little embarrassed
when I cheered louder than she did over
the accorplishrnent. At the other end of
the spectrum, I looked on as a fellow over-
shot the same green three times. Now, I'm
not one to revel in other's misfortunes -but
it was comforting to see someone struggl-
ing as I do when I put away the camera
and break out the clubs.
The word "break" is a fitting one. To
me, it seems that the person who invented
the game purpdsely spelled the name for it
backwards. "Flogging" seems a much
more appropriate and much more descrip-
tive term for the game —at least the way I
play it anyway.
Admittedly, I play infrequently and
can't expect to shoot a good round without
devoting more time to it. But when I slice a
ball so fag into the rough that I need a
machete to get it out, frustration begins to
set in.
It's then that, I ., find myself reaching
absentminded1 fOr my:;..cani r'a:..,for
comfort.
Getting a shot of a golfer holing a fifty
foot putt or one of a competitor shaking his
head in frustrationis somehow soothing
and therapeutic. It makes me 'feel better
about my golf game, other golfers, golf
courses and the world in general.
But then again, so does wrapping my
clubs around the nearest tree.
