HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1986-07-30, Page 18PAGE 4A —GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY, JULY 30, 1986 EntertainmentSENI Jazzvox impresses with a. pvening of "Swing 'n Stuff" at the Livery BY PAUL HARTMAN One needn't' have possessed a knowledge of the music from the swing era to enjoy the Goderich Little Theatre's presentation of "Swing 'n Stuff" featuring Jazzvox on Fri- day and Saturday night at the Livery Theatre. But even the most discriminating off ears would have been duly impressed with per- formance of the six Goderich area youngsters as they sang and bantered their way through art evening of music from the time when Swing was King." From the opening number, "Route 66" it was obvious that Jazzvox -comprised of Laura, Robin and Craig Wark, Erin and Baird Robinson with Lori Millian on piano- was replete with talent.. All five possess rich, full voices that com- plement each other when combined. The harmonies, often in five parts, were precise and stirring. The group displayed good dynamic nami r nage thfromroughout the evening, softest of softs to louds that made the rafters ring, with seemingly little effort. The effect was aided by a fine sound system and the capable mixing of Warren Robinson. Their portion of the program included "T Sing the Body Electric" from the musical "Fame" with a powerful solo by .Laura Wark. Other highlights included an You" and cap- pella version of "1'l1 Be Seeing You resounding rendition of the complex "Rhythm of Life." All five singers were featured at different times during the program and each handled their solo work with vigour and skill. ' Lori Minim, the accompaniest, may not have been as • noticeable as the other five members of the group but she played the dif- ficult swing pieces with apparent ease. Overall, Jazzvox was very impressive. Not one wrong note was evident in their en- tire program and many of the songs were performed with such verve that they made the skin tangle. My only complaint lies in the fact that the five seemed a little reserved on Cage, a trait that should disappear e -and theirvisit a t t workshop in the fall in Kalamazoo, Michigan run by the director of the Manhattan Transfer. the program to Earl Salter and Joyce Kuran who performed a duet and solos -most from the Cole Porter musical "Anything Goes."
