RotaryClub to create new
foun ta n park at waterfront
While drilling saltwells near Goderich
Harbor in 1870, Richard Hawley struck two
mineral springs at a depth of 350 feet.
More than a century has passed since the
discovery, but the springs, which flowed
then at a rate of 200 gallons per minute, are
still quite active.
The mineral springs, located between
Harbor Street and the CPR Railway Station,
will be diverted to a new location near the
town's boardwalk by the Goderich Rotary
Club. .The service club, which will be
celebrating its 25th year of service to the
community in 1987, wanted to get involved
with a, project of permanence and
,substance.
The Mineral Spring -Fountain project will
ultimately fill the bill. The mineral spring
will be diverted to an area between the CPR
turntable and the existing boardwalk. The
fountain and parkette will be up to 200 feet
wide and there will be a 40 foot buffer strip
between the project, which will be 75 feet
deep to the boardwalk, and the railway,
turntable.
The present location of 'the spring is too
small to accomrniodate the project as plann-
ed and the town is currently attempting to
obtain rights to the new location on behalf of
the club.
The restoration of the mineral spring, the
construction of the fountain and 'thee creation
of a parkette will cost betv'een. $40,000 and
$60,000 but funds raised by the club are mat-
ched by a provincial grant.
Project chairman, Howard Aitken, said
the club hopes to enhance the town's efforts
in the waterfront area.
"This is the Rotary Club's 24th year in
Goderich and we were looking for a project
with permanency and one that was wor-
thwhile," he explained. "We think the
mineral spring -fountain project will
enhance the park -like area of the waterfront
and the location will give people an oppor-
tunity to sit and view the lake. We hope it
will become a picture -taking sight on the
lakefront."
The artisan spring will be, sealed, the

water piped to the new site which will
feature a tower, waterfalls and a land-
scaped area in the shape of the town's core
square. The natural pressure of the spring
will produce a fountain effect without pump-
ing and provisions will be made to divert the
water into the lake during the winter. The
area will be lit and landscaped.
The club is financing the project partly
through its car draw, in which a 1986 Expo
edition Pontiac Grand Am will be the prize.
The draw will be made August 23. Tickets,
at $5 each or three for $10, are available
from all Rotary club rnembers and at
special events.
The mineral springs were a noted attrac-
tion in Goderich in the late 1800s and it was
reported in a newspaper from that era that
the water had medicinal properties. "The
medicinal qualities of these waters have
been recognized in the most glowing terms,
not only by eminent chemists and physi-
cians, but also by a great number of ladies
and gentlemen of acknowledged probity
and intelligence from• all parts of the world,
who, have benefited, sometimes in an almost
miraculous manner," the article read. -
