Beecroft, who has travelled through the United States, " 12 European countries, Greece, India, Australia and Canada, said in an -interview onf1ighway 21 north of Goderich on the final leg of his arduous journey to Toronto, that "MS persons have been inspiring." "I am trying to make people aware of MS and hopefully, giving inspiration to MS per- sons so they can focus on their abilities, not their disabilities," he said. " MS people have been inspiring and they are saying `maybe I can do more." Born in Sheffield, England in 1950, Beecroft emigrated to Canada with his family in the summer of 1959. In 1976 he was bedridden by the disease but the following year the disease was in remission and he almost completely recovered. Because balance was a problem, he still found walking difficult, but cycling, he discovered, was his ticket to mobility. It was in 1981 that he celebrated the return of his health and the ,International Year of the Disabled with a cross -Canada Cycle of Celebration. When he finished the cross- country trek in St. Johns, Newfoundland on Aug. 26, 1981, he became the first disabled person to cross Canada under his own power. Two years later he launched his World Tour .in Toronto that would take through Eastern Canada, the United States, Europe, Asia and Australia. As he cycled through Goderich Tuesday afternoon, he was just a few hundred kilometres short of his goal of travelling 40,000 km., the distance equal to the circumference of the earth. He returned to Canada in December 1985 to begin the final segment of his journey from Expo '86 in Vancouver to Toronto. Centre neighbours discuss security • from page 1 A guard patrolling the perimeter is not sufficient in her opinion. Hoffiney-eri also' suggested that the On- tario Provincial Police detachment have its manpower increased and a tracking dog be stationed here. The centre is here now, she said. The government should pro- vide the funding and the manpower to sup- port the measures that must be taken to provide security for people living in the area. • . Jacquie Walling whose husband, Jim was assaulted the night of the escape, was more critical of the meeting. She said she expected it to be quite professional but it ,was poorly organized. Everyone who came to the meetinghad their cars stopped and checked at the gate. People had to wait in line togain access to the centreand by'die time Jacquie and her husband, entered the meeting it had already started. The meeting was held in the cafeteria CHECK AND COMPARE and the acoustics were bad. She said peo- ple were frustrated because they couldn't hear. . - The „meeting.. provided people. with the opportunity to vent their frustration and anger, said Walling, and at times the meeting became quite heated. It was also intended to educate people about the cen- tre. Residents at the centre parked cars and escorted people to the meeting, which provided a positive association with the young offenders. Some people wanted the centre turned ' into a maximum security facility with guard dogs, a double fence, uniforms for the inmates and a guard tower, she said. Superintendent Carl DeGrandis rejected these suggestions. Walling said she believes when these kids get'together they -start entertaining ideas of escaping. If they do, they are prepared to get into more serious trouble .5 0/0 to make good their attempt to get away. The neighbours havato realize, they are not coming to do them harm but they will fight back if cornored, said Walling. "My husband realized they were not trying to beat him up, they were trying to get away.,,. The escape was very ingenious, she said. They gave it a lot of thought and waited for someone to make a mistake and leave a door unlocked. Walling said the offenders read the local paper and they will know that the neighbourhood is prepared if they escape. "We will lock our doors and we will lock our cars. If another escape occurs, we will be prepared to handleit," she said.
