Wraith raps out two -run triple
as Orioles soar over Kirkey's 5-2
Last Monday, July 14, Bill Wraith hit a
two -out two run triple to lead the Orioles to
a 5-2 win over Kirkey's. Kirkey's had
scored one• in the first inning but the
Orioles came right back in the hottombalf
of the. inning. The game remained tied un-
til the fourth when Kevin Meriam Jed off
the inning with a single. He later scored
when Kirkey's turned a double play. Jim
Beattie was next up and he got a bunt
single. Following him was Bob Graham
who reached base safely on an error. Then
cane Wraith's clutch hit to put the Orioles
ahead to stay. Kirkey's got one back in the
fifth but again the Orioles answered that in
their half of the inning. Rob Plunkett pitch-
ed for the Orioles and allowed only three
hits, a double and two singles.
In the second game Goderich Tire
jumped all over Hayter's °Des Courtney
and scored five runs in the top of the first.
Hayter's was unableto come back and
Goderich Tire went on to win the game 8-2.
Goderich Tire scored their first three bat-
ters and that was all they, would need as
winning pitcher John Bogie struck out
seven in the first four innings and spread
out six hits over a full seven innings.
Leading Goderich Tire at the plate were
designated hitter Mike Ryan who went 3-4
and Dan Durst who had three RBI's.
On Tuesday the Orioles won an extra in-
ning thriller over French 5-4.
In the eighth inning Rob Plunkett singled
and fnoved to second on a fielder's choice.
Brian Rummig sacrificed him to third and
French intentionally walked Steve Hag-
gitt. Next batter up was Darryl Beattie
who promply hit the first pitch to the fence
to score Plunkett. Earlier French had
taken a 2-1 lead in the second inning but
then let the Orioles go ahead 3-2 in the
fourth inning. • French .countered by scor-
ing once again in the fifth to tie the game.
In the top -of the seventhFrenchscored
what appeared to be the go-ahead run on
an Oriole error at the plate: But the Orioles
came back as Kevin Meriam delivered a
pinch hit single with two out. As he was
stealing second French threw to second
but the ball bounced into centre field and
Meriam headed to third. The French
centerfielder then attempted to throw the
ball to third but it ,ended up on the track
enabling Meriam to score.
The second • game saw Sy Langlois of
Sherwood in a pitcher's duel with Goderich
Tire's John Bogie. Both faced the
minimum amount of batters through the
first three and a half innings. Goderich
Tire scored first when Dave Gallow singl-
ed and scored on a sacrifice fly by Harold
Peet. Sherwood went ahead in the sixth as
they scored two runs on a passed ball and
a Langlois single. Goderich Tire tied the
game in the seventh to send the game into
extra innings. In the eighth, Dave Gallow

singled, went to second on•a Dana Doherty
bunt single" and reached third on a passed
ball. Sherwood then loaded the bases when
they intentionally walked league leading
hitter Harold Peet. The next'batter struck
out, but Dave McDonald then walked to
force in the winning run.
On Wednesday Denomme's beat the
Juniors 11-1 in five innings. Denomme
starting pitcher Paul Corriveau allowed
one hit and struck out four in the four inn-
ings that. he..pitched. The :Junior run came
from a Sean Gosse triple and a Jay
Williamson RBI single. John Hoy went 3-4 •
with three runs and a RBI; Brian Shewfelt
2-4, two runs and a RBI; and Wil
Denomme 2-3 with two RBI's to offensively
lead Denomme's.
In the nightcap Sherwood won a close 4-2
decision over Kirkey's on a disputed call at
home plate. Kirkey's was leading 2-1 in the
fourth when Sherwood had a runner on
third. As he attempted to come home on a
Bill Tigert hit,the right fielder threw to
home in an attempt to get the runner. It ap-
peared as if Kirkey's tagged him out to end ,
the inning but it was ruled thatthe catcher
missed the tag an'd the run scored. Sher-
wood scored twice more before the inning
was over. Naturally Kirkey's was very
upset and could hot muster a comenack
bid in the final three innings. Sherwood pit-
cher John Peet allowed four hits in getting
the win.
