(photo by Dave Sykes) The Goderich Warriors fought the heat and a team from Stratford known as the Scuz and emerged with a 6-4 victory in the `A' championship final at a ball hockey tournament in Goderich on the Weekend. The. MVP for the Warriors was John Thompson. The team received a trophy and individual players received medallions for their efforts. The runner-up Stratford team were rewarded with a plaque. In the `B' division final two Clinton teams faced off against each other. The Rebels shut out the Bandits 3L0 to claim the title with Rebel goalie Jeff Roy earning the shut -out and MVP honors. The two teams received similar prizes to the `A' champs and runners-up. Tournament organizer, Andy Fowler noted the efforts of head referee, Terry Miller and head timekeeper Jeff Scott. Dances were held on both Friday and Saturday and some of the proceeds will be going to the Optimist Club. Mitchelmore hurls three -hit shutout as the Elevators snap losing string The Goderich Elevators Ladies fastball team bounced back fruiu their losing streak winning all three contests over the past two weeks. On July 7, Denise Mitchelmore pitched a three -hitter against Benmiller as the Elevators won 11- 0. Jan Rutledge was hot for the Elevators hitting two triples a dou- ble and a home run in four at bats. Team- mate Louise Brown also came up with four hits in as many trips to the plate. Sandy Willis took the loss with teammates Suanne Smith, Laurie . Paquette, and Shirley. Fisher recording the Benmiller hits. The Elevators bats were hot again on Ju- ly 9 as they downed Art's Landscaping 20 - 7. Sherry Muxlow, Barb Petrie and Denise Mitchelmore racked up three hits each for the Elevators. Mitchelmore went the distance for the win with Judy Draper and Cathy Robb sharing the mound duties for Art's. Draper also led her team offensively with two hits in three tries. The Elevators come on strong against Lucknow scoring seven runs in the first in, ning; they slowed down considerably ad- ding only one more in the third and two in the fourth. Lucknow managed a four run rally in the seventh, but it was too little too late as they dropped a 10 - 6.decision. Sherry Muxlow and Louise Brown led the Elevators with three hits each. Laurie West, Janice Cook, Bonnie MacDonald and Darlene Kurk had two huts each for Lucknow. Darlene (Spike) Kurk went the distance for Lucknow. Kirkey's had scored one• in the first inning but the Orioles came right back in the hottombalf of the. inning. The game remained tied un- til the fourth when Kevin Meriam Jed off the inning with a single. He later scored when Kirkey's turned a double play. Jim Beattie was next up and he got a bunt single. Following him was Bob Graham who reached base safely on an error. Then cane Wraith's clutch hit to put the Orioles ahead to stay. Kirkey's got one back in the fifth but again the Orioles answered that in their half of the inning. Rob Plunkett pitch- ed for the Orioles and allowed only three hits, a double and two singles. In the second game Goderich Tire jumped all over Hayter's °Des Courtney and scored five runs in the top of the first. Hayter's was unableto come back and Goderich Tire went on to win the game 8-2. Goderich Tire scored their first three bat- ters and that was all they, would need as winning pitcher John Bogie struck out seven in the first four innings and spread out six hits over a full seven innings. Leading Goderich Tire at the plate were designated hitter Mike Ryan who went 3-4 and Dan Durst who had three RBI's. On Tuesday the Orioles won an extra in- ning thriller over French 5-4. In the eighth inning Rob Plunkett singled and fnoved to second on a fielder's choice. Brian Rummig sacrificed him to third and French intentionally walked Steve Hag- gitt. Next batter up was Darryl Beattie who promply hit the first pitch to the fence to score Plunkett. Earlier French had taken a 2-1 lead in the second inning but then let the Orioles go ahead 3-2 in the fourth inning. • French .countered by scor- ing once again in the fifth to tie the game. In the top -of the seventhFrenchscored what appeared to be the go-ahead run on an Oriole error at the plate: But the Orioles came back as Kevin Meriam delivered a pinch hit single with two out. As he was stealing second French threw to second but the ball bounced into centre field and Meriam headed to third. The French centerfielder then attempted to throw the ball to third but it ,ended up on the track enabling Meriam to score. The second • game saw Sy Langlois of Sherwood in a pitcher's duel with Goderich Tire's John Bogie. Both faced the minimum amount of batters through the first three and a half innings. Goderich Tire scored first when Dave Gallow singl- ed and scored on a sacrifice fly by Harold Peet. Sherwood went ahead in the sixth as they scored two runs on a passed ball and a Langlois single. On Wednesday Denomme's beat the Juniors 11-1 in five innings. Denomme starting pitcher Paul Corriveau allowed one hit and struck out four in the four inn- ings that. he..pitched. The :Junior run came from a Sean Gosse triple and a Jay Williamson RBI single. John Hoy went 3-4 • with three runs and a RBI; Brian Shewfelt 2-4, two runs and a RBI; and Wil Denomme 2-3 with two RBI's to offensively lead Denomme's. In the nightcap Sherwood won a close 4-2 decision over Kirkey's on a disputed call at home plate. Kirkey's was leading 2-1 in the fourth when Sherwood had a runner on third. As he attempted to come home on a Bill Tigert hit,the right fielder threw to home in an attempt to get the runner. It ap- peared as if Kirkey's tagged him out to end , the inning but it was ruled thatthe catcher missed the tag an'd the run scored. Sher- wood scored twice more before the inning was over. Dorie Kolkman collected three hits for the losers. Sifto had two big innings on sjrong ting from Gayle Jones, Jackie Harrison and Holly Doherty as they defeated the Hot Shots 214 on July 16. On Thursday July 17, Go-4-Ettes extend- ed their winning streak, as they outshone Samuelson's 6-2, Barb O'Brien and Debbie Ciarance collected two hits apiece for the winners.
