Love Ken Over 2,500 children visited conservation area during 1985-86 Programs at the Wawanosh Valley Cep' said Perkin. servation Education Centre have been suc- cessfully completed with about 2,500 children visiting the Centre during the 1985-86 school year. The Centre, which offers a variety of con- servation education programs in fall, winter and spring has hosted . schools from the Huron County Board . of Education and Huron -Perth Separate School Board. The ' Wawanosh Centre is located southwest of Wthgham, on the Maitland River. It is operated by the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority. Classes visiting the site can choose one of a number of pro ,rams from sensory hikes for the young, to indepth forest manage- ment and stream studies for older students. Stream studies were very -popular with teachers and students this spring. Students explored a section of the Belgrave Creek to search for its inhabitants; ,fish,- turtles, frogs, crayfish and a variety of insects. The captured inhabitants were examined and released. In the process students learn about life in a stream, food chains and how man's activities can affect water quality. Debra Perkin, Conservation Education Technician for the Maitland Valley Conser- vation Authority conducts the programs and is assisted by Diane Lalonde. "We want children to be comfortable in the outdoors and gain an appreciation and awareness of our natural envitaonment," • "Through these activities the children also become more knowledgeable about the. environment, and the need to manage natural resources. We do this by having `hands on' activities where the students learn by doing" she said: The programs are designed to reflect and enhance what the children study in the classroom. The Wawanosh Valley Conservation Area is an ideal place for learning about the out- doors. The property has 400 acres of rolling hills, natural hardwood forest and con- • iferous plantation. A classroom facility was set up on the site in 1984 when an initial pilot project was offered to several classes from watershed schools. Since that time, programs have expanded to fill the need for outdoor education. , "Teachers and students have been pleas- ed with the programs," said Perkin, "we really appreciate their enthusiasm and support." The Conservation Education programs are also available to all, organized groups such as Girls Guides and Scouts. Trained in- terpreters are available through the MVCA to design programs relating to the groups particular studies. • School programs will resume in the fall. Anyone requesting further information about the programs can contact the MVCA office in Wroxeter. 53 South St. 524-4279 k Guaranteed Investment Certificates 1 0 1 0/ 4po trar Iran Interest paid annualh ►hntmuln deposit.
