FORDYCE CLARK The most thrilling event of the fall term was school fair. Colborne Township held its fairs at. Carlow from about 1918 until 1943. The day school opened ih September, marching practice began and the pounding of "left, left" rang out around the schoolyards of the township. Two of the older pupils usually carried the all-important banner which must be ' different every year because prizes were awarded for both costumes and banners as m well as the arching. Meanwhile exhibits were being prepared at home. There were Flosses for all work done in school — art, writing, maps, manual training, and carefully graded to age and class of competitor. Garden produce grown from school seeds was exhibited. It was thrilling to capture the red ribbon for largest pumpkin in the show! There were classes for sewing and baking and quite often it was Johnny who took the prize for chocolate cake. Eggs had a section of their own, prizes for one dozen brown and white. It was per- missible to select one or two of the best at home then solicit the best from the neighbors to complete the required dozen. Exhibits were placed in the hall in the mor- ning. Animals and poultry were carefully attached - to some part of the township shed. Promptly at one, the "March" began. Sometimes there was.a band or drum, but always the teacher walked beside her com- pany to supply the' "left, left, left -right - left." Each had a school song and the school yell. It is not clear,,just how these The Christmas Country Fair were judged. It soon became a big event in the community. U Mrs. Evelyn Hardy performed most capably as convenor until 1982 when she felt it was la time to take a rest. The old-fashioned country co-operation was very evident as many in the Township of U Colborne became involved.
