The Goderich-Kincar-dine railway line was abandoned
In the early 1900's railways were looked
upon as tickets to prosperity. The Ontario
West Shore Electric Railway which was to
run from Goderich to Kincardine was such
a dream. As the name implies it was to be
powered by electricity but the plan did not
materialize and a steam locomotive Was
used.
Many such As were already operating
in 'Ontario- and because travel facilities
were very limited, the promise of frequent
service was enticing. Transportation for
schOol children and freight facilities with
numerous sidings were also offered. The
men responsible for incorporating, the
Company in 1912 were Joseph Goldthorpe,
a Colborne resident and Sanford grocer,
and three Goderich men, Messrs.
McGillicuddy, Wilson and Cameron. Mr.
H.J.A. MacEwan was named secretary.
They began petitioning the Towns of
Goderich and Kincardine and Townships
of Ashfield and Huron for support.

The ratepayers of Colborne were strong-
ly opposed to the railway although the
route passed through the Township along
what is now Highway 21, except at Dunlop
where the tracks were placed on the road
allowance because of the hotel on the
north-east corner. Colborne insisted the
corner was hazardous and there are
stories aboqt-the tracks at this intersection
being torxrup in the night and abutments
being smashed.
Finally it was agreed that the train
would whistle and come to a stop at this
corner. The four municipalities finally
