Happy 151
Colborne.
Happy 150th birthday Colborne Township!
For the good people of the township and those who live in its villages and hamlets, 1986'
has been a year of celebration, work, organization, planning and recollection.
Ce,rtainly, it is an auspicious occasion in the history of a community such as Colborne,
but a Sesquicentennial is so much more than a weekend of celebrations, fun and food.
Colborne's Sesquicentennial has been embraced as a celebration of history and
heritage. From its humble beginnings in 1836when the governing body of the township
consisted of two commissioners to its first elected council in 1850 and through to its, pre-
sent administration, Colborne Township is a municipality with a rich legacy of communi-
ty spirit and commitment.
And so, the residents of the township are celebrating more than the birth of the area as
a municipality. Rather, the Sesquicentennial will be a celebration of family history
through several generations, it is a celebration of perseverence; of 'an indomitable
pioneer spirit and the establishment of a community. It is a celebration of community
and the intrinsic spirit that pervades.
Colborne is rich in history and it is a community without pretense. A township with an
Agrarian background, it is still made up of descendents of those early pioneers and the
people are still close to the land.
The history of the township is a most colourful and interesting one and that history has
been carefully documented and chronicled in the township's official history book which
will be unveiled Friday, July 18 at a special ceremony; to kick off the three-day celebra-
tion. The book was published under the direction of Shirley Hazlitt and a number of in-,
defatigable workers who assisted. They completed this ambitious project through adver-
sity
dversity and no dobut, did' an admirable job.
The book' will undoubtedly add a measure of dignity and purpose to the Sesquicenten-
nial celelbrations.
The.entire Sesquicentennial celebrations has required a rather large commitment from
many people in the township. They have worked long and hard to produce. this year of
celebration and their efforts -will culminate withTthe`three-day celebrations this weekend.
This list of events offered is impressive and the steering committee and all their
volunteers should be commended for a job well done. Your efforts will not go unnoticed.
It takes the collective effort of an entire community to make such a project work. It
takes planning, orgawiization, commitment and pride in the cominunity. Colborne has the
people to accomplish that "task.
The events will attract a number of visitors to the township and, no doubt, many
former residents will be back to renew old acquantances and revel in good old Colborne
hospitality.
From the unveiling of the history book to the Joly Miller Theatre Production through to
the sporting events, dances, barbecues, parade, historical displays and church Service,
the Sesquicentennial in Colborne Township promises to be a memorable one.
To the citizens of Colborne Township, we salute you and trust that the celebration will
be a most memorable and successful one.
Happy 150th anniversary Colborne Township and may your future be a prosperous one.
