Kirkey's runs- out of
gas in 5-1 loss to French
Last week's Fastball action began last
Monday with French beating Kirkey's by a
score of 5-1. It was a home run by Kevin
Jewell that powered French to the win.
Kirlhey's scored first when Paul Kelley
scored on a passed ball. French evened the
score on a Dave Schuck -single that brought
in Don Bogie. Pitcher Don Bogie then shut
Kirkey's down by allowing just two hits,
walking none and striking out nine. French
put the game out of reach.scoring once in
the sixth and twice more in the seventh. nth
.Ed
Johnston doubled in the seventh to bringin,
the two runs. •
In the second game Goderich Tire ham-
mered the Orioles 9-2 on the strength of
Terry Austin's hitting. He went 3-4, scored
a run and had three RBIs. Pitcher Don
Bogie allowed six hits and struck out five.
Goderich Tire took a 2=0 lead in the first on
Austin's two run single. The Orioles got
one back in the third but Goderich Tire
came back with one of their own in the
fourth. Goderich Tire put it out of reach
with two, runs in the fifth and four more in
the sixth.

whipped by a score of 9-1 by Sherwood. The

as good in allowing four hits and striking
out five. Denomme's scored the only run
they would need in the fifth inning. Chris
Connor, playing in his first game, got first
with a bunt single with mo one out. Jack
MacKinnon then sacrificed Connor to

drive in the winningn:

r he second game -was just as exciting' as
the\Orioles and Hayter's went into extra
innings. Hayter's won 7-6 in the bottom of
the eighth when with bases loaded Phil
Petrie singled. Hayter's had been winning-

inning4-3 when the Orioles struck for three runs
in the top of the seventh to go ahead 6-4.
But the Orioles could not hold it and Dave
McDonald and Myles Murdock singled in
runs to tie the game. In the eighth, Gary
Cox singled, Des Courtney reached base on
an error and Andy Moore singled to load
the bases, setting up the win for Petrie.
Hat'ter's showed they had broken out of '
their slump with a 14-1 drubbing of the
Juniors. Andy Moore homered to score the
first run but the man with the big bat was
Warren Watt who belted the league's first
grand slam in the sixth inning to end the
game early. Pitcher Dave Scholl allowed
three hits and struck out five. Darryl
Black
scored the only Junior
run
when
Mark Ducharme singled him in.

Divisional races begin to
heat up in Men's League
With only three weeks remaining in the
regular season of the GMSL, the divisional
races are beginning to heat up. Keep in
mind that a team's final standing deter-
mines their division.
The league splits intotwo divisions of
seven teams each and one division of eight.
The eight team division would likely be
"B" unless the 'standings.show a natural
split elsewhere.
Round one of the playoffs begin after our
tournament and carry through, until
Labour Day. This is a divisional round
robin setup. Elimination rounds featuring
the top teams in each division then occur.
It really is
goingto be a battle. Last week's
10-10 tie between Coyotes and Nissan was
only a sample of what is to come.
Our eighth annual tournament has now
been filled. We have 17 Goderich teams
battling 15 out of town teams for $3275. in
prize money. Out of town entries include'
teams from Wingham, Harriston,
Listowel, Kitchener, Don Valley, Brant-
ford, Ingersoll, London, Wallaceburg and
Windsor. Tournament work schedules and -
playoff schedules are in the making right
now.
