Readers express .varied concerns
to newspaper's general manager
Friday morning from 10 a.m. to. 12 noon is
the best time of the week, says Shirley J.
Keller, general manager of The Goderich
Signal -Star.
That's the time of the week that Shirley
has reserved to talk to Signal -Star
° customers, and according to Shirley, she's
getting a good response from Goderich and
area residents who call to talk about their
weekly newspaper.
"We started the Open Line because we
' want to encourage people to voice their opi-
nions about our newspaper," says Shirley.
"We really need to know what ISeople think
about our paper, because that's the only
way we can ever hope to come closer to pro-
viding the kind of a newspaper that people
really want to read".
Shirley gets all kinds of calls.
For example, she heard from one reader
who was particularly upset because the
items he wanted to buy at a garage sale had
been••sold the Thursday previous.to the sale.
The caller wanted to suggest that an llth tip
be added to Signal -Star's garage sale kit list
of tips for planning,a successful garage sale
- that the sale doesn't begin until the adver-
tised hour.
• Another reader called to ask why the
Signal -Star did not report all the incidents of
vandalism in town. The caller reported that:
one location in town was vandalized ahnost
every weekend.
Shirley checked with the local police chief
and found the caller had exaggerated the
number of. incidents at this particular loca-
tion ... and also discovered that police and
-the police commission tend to believe it is
likewaving a red flag in front of a bull to
report every incident of vandalism every
week.
"It's an invitation to outdo the previous
vandals," explains Shirley.
One rural subscriber telephoned express-
ly to say "thank you" toThe Signal -Star cir-
culation department for making it possible
for her to have her newspaper on Wednes-
day instead of Thursday.
"It is very gratifying when people notice
the efforts we are making to improve our.
service to the community,". says Shirley.
"We like to take calls like that."
But there are other . callers who areless
satisfied. One caller complained that there
are far too many stories and pictures for
and about children and young people - and
not nearly enough attention paid to the
Lanaua
htre a lent.

Ministry answers site questions
Larry Struthers, inspector with the
Ministry of the Environment, attended the
July 8 meeting of West Wawanosh Council
to answer questions abeq the operation of
the township waste disposal site. Dump
supervisor Gordon Foran was in atten-
dance.
The burning of domestic waste was the
main topic of discussion. Struthers stress-
ed that the ministry has not changed its
policy and no burning of raw household
garbage is allowed, even though the
ministry has been pressured recently by
some municipal authorities to allow burn-
ing in small municipal dumps.
Rat control was also discussed at length
but the problem was not resolved.
The ministry has accepted the Plan of
Operation for the dump as prepared by the
engineer and once adopted by council, a
new Certificate of Approval for the
disposal site will be issued. The site must
then be operated as outlined in the plan.
